After I finished reading the delightful book about the Kakapo recovery projects in New Zealand, I checked their website ... and see that from 2010 to the present the number of kakapos has increased to 160. Almost 160. The website has a wealth of information about these enormous parrots and how difficult it is to save a species that is tasty, doesn't fly, and isn't afraid of you. They do take donations, and if you donate through the US partner you can take the tax credit for it. Whether you want to donate or not, it's really interesting to learn about the kakapo.

Currently I have none, but I have the capacity to adopt a minimum and maximum of two budgies - preferably a bonded pair or two males.
The Kakapo Recovery project is indeed a stellar project and possibly the best even wild life conservation program of the 20th and 21st century.

The man who pioneered it all was Don Merton.

This documentary may be of interest to those deeply interested in the Kakapo

Also a good book to read is Rat Island by William Stolzenburg. Though the book is titled Rat island, it is all about birds and the Kakapo plays a major role across many chapters of the book.

cheers

Iā€™ll put Rat Island on my list, thanks. And as soon as I get to the free WiFi Iā€™ll watch the video. I read a little about Don, I think ... didnā€™t he establish a kakapo colony, only to have stoats swim to the island and wipe out his lifeā€™s work? Heartrending.

Hmm! You know about this great parrot species.

Yes there was this guy who lived a 100 + years ago and did that but that was not Don Merton; he is the guy who greatly inspired Don Merton and Don named a very important Kakapo Male after him :)

cheers
