Birdy bodily functions - passing gas?

Well, this is an embarrassing topic.

I was playing with Charlie not long ago and ohh man he did a stinker :19: it was that silent and deadly kind... I swear he had a sheepish look about him after. i can confirm it wasn’t me or the dog lol
Has anyone ever experienced their bird passing gas?

Can't say I've ever noticed this particular bodily function from a parrot before. In fact, to my knowledge birds of any kind don't really pass gas like mammals do. They can learn to mimic fart sounds but I'm almost certain it's not a biological function of theirs.

One concerning thing that stood out to me- parrots should never produce bad odors of any kind from either end. Their droppings should never have any odor to them and I would imagine neither should any gas they may have (being it all comes from the same place). Might consider a vet checkup to be sure everything is ok if your bird is having smelly gas and/or droppings. A bad odor is usually a sign of infection and as I'm fairly certain gas is not normal for them, that in and of itself could be a sign of infection as well.

interestingly the thing I just read said it's not impossible if the bacteria were present but is more likely them playing. It also goes on to say that with a gassy build up they may be more likely to burp but there's never been a recorded instance of a bird burp

Might not be a bad idea.

I noticed my bird seemed to have an itchy butt. Turns out it's a byproduct of a serious kidney infection

Better safe than sorry and to contact the vet to get a professional take on the matter!

Did you happen to feed her or let her drink any type of human foods before she passed the gas? I've heard of people allowing their birds to drink carbonated beverages, which can cause a slew of issues, one being gas bubbles actually caught throughout the GI tract of the bird. Just checking, it's not uncommon for birds to have certain foods and drinks introduced into their GI tracts that cause this issue, it's not a good thing and does require an Avian Vet in a lot of cases, especially if you introduced a type bacteria or food that contains the type of bacteria that can cause this issue...

I watched a YouTube video a long time ago, it may still be up, that made me sick, it was a person videoing their African Gray constantly "burping" and adjusting it's crop, and they thought it was hysterical, as they kept feeding the bird soda, and the carbonation was causing crop issues. Not cool.

Peanut has never passed gas or had any smell to her droppings. I always thought that was a good thing about birds, thie poop doesnt stink. Id be worried if it did.

I'm agreeing with recommendations for vet input.

But my first thought was... exxxxxcellent! A bad habit thst the Rickeybird DOESN'T have!

Sometimes my guys make a slight pop sound when they poop, but no odour! Another vote for the vet!

I swear our BFA used to fart. No sound, but a weird smell would sometimes come out of nowhere next to him. He did used to get little bits of pizza now and then, maybe it was the cheese? I believe it happens.

Thank you all again for giving me your thoughts and suggestions. Charlie is believed to be healthy and that the cheese i gave him the other day before this whole gas problem might have been the actual cause. So moderation is definitely key, of course the situation is still being monitored just in case the diagnosis is wrong. I think Kentuckienne is onto something.

It also appears that Charlie, even though he is 8 months old has started his hormonal phase insanely early. Trying to hump my and regurgitate lol.
i did not expect it so early but anyway life with a parrot is an adventure

yeah cheese sounds like a good culprit we all know what lactose intolerant people get like when given some dairy!

this year seems to have a lot of parrots getting ramped up quite early. Not sure about USA but over here summer weather has hit hard and fast. Hottest temperatures for May ever! If it's anything like this over the 'pond' then it would explain the sudden hormones kicking in
