temptations

So, lately I've picked up a lot more shifts and I am making a lot more money than I was before and the option to get a second bird has opened up (as well as a full time job instead of the as needed that I am doing right now). I've been wanting a second bird for awhile as I have lots of love to give and I genuinely just love taking care of animals and learning all about them individually. I don't entirely want to get a new bird right now, but at the same time I really want to. If I got one NOW I wouldn't be able to get Lincoln a new cage and right now that's my priority. The temptation won't leave me alone though x'D I've just been low-key looking at the rescue near me, looking into their adoption process and fees and just.. tallying it all up and thinking >>

with an attitude like that somebody probably will leave a parrotsized basket at your front door with a "plze take care of this bird" card attached!

I made a mistake. I've looked at prices of cages that I would need for the conure (heart set on a conure) and other supplies and if I budget everything correctly and such I could possibly get both. Cage comes first though and we will see about a possible bird in a month or two >>

Rescue was rather vague about the fee for a bird only really saying it varies from bird to bird but to except to pay at least 50% of their "retail" price. So I just took the price for a basic no fancy color mutations gcc and factored that into my price estimate for all of this.

I also need to factor in talking to the rest of my family RIP

I just got a new bird and just yesterday saw another one for sale, a female, and a rare mutation yellowcheek pearl cockatiel. I almost pulled the trigger on her but stopped myself since I just got my new one. The voice of reason in my head tells me to wait, bond with my bird I have, and get a female next year. It is SO hard to make the right decision. My heart/emotions says YES, but my head/logic/reason is saying NO.

My advice... Remember your priorities. Another bird means twice the cost of food, another cage and split time between your two bids if they don't get along. Or if you were to suddenly get let go from this job, then you have no way to pay for their food and stuff.

My suggestion is to keep saving. Don't let the extra money fool you into thinking you can afford more than you can earn. Keep doing the full-time thing, get Lincoln's new cage and save -- I can't remember if you live on your own or at your parent's house still, going to college?

Remember that when you live on your own (which everyone does eventually) , you will have to keep that full-time job and pay for rent, utilities, phone bill, car insurance, internet, etc -- that doesn't even include bird stuff. What I'm saying is, just because you can afford another bird now, doesn't mean that when you move out in a year you will. you don't want to bite off more than you can chew now because your situation is ideal now, but will be changing in say, two years.

All those expenses will take up most of your paycheck, so be diligent on what you spend your money on now, you'll have to provide for your birds for 40+ years!

Itz, price isn't a huge concern as I still have my parents I can lean on if need be (in the case I am let go from this job which isn't very likely unless I mess up) I, of course, would still be taking full responsibility of this bird and would much prefer to pay for everything on my own but point is, if it came to it I can lean on my parents.

I do still live with my parents but college isn't really a thing that I expect anywhere in the near future due to personal problems aka I barely based highschool because of mental disabilities that made it near impossible and I feel like I would just flunk out of college and it would be a waste.

I see your reasoning and its 99% of the reason why I won't be getting another bird now and wait until I am for sure getting this job promotion or not.

I’m with you. I really want a second parrot. But I realize Parker is already a handful, care wise. I don’t want to be cleaning 4 cages (everyone needs a main cage and play stand cage). Two cages and a play stand is seniugh for me.

Plus, our dog sitting business is picking up lately and we’ve been crushed - we are poised to make double what we made last year. As a result Parker hasn’t had substantial time out of cage on A few weeks. We’re working through ways to remedy this but my partners been having to spend substantial time away from home the last few week, compounding the problem.

Long way go saying - only in my dreams.
