Weird to celebrate a holiday where the primary focus is eating a bird, but they aren't parrots anyways.....so I guess it's ok.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and everyone as well! This is my first year having a parrot as an adult and I've had that inner crisis of 'I feel guilty for eating a bird now that I am a bird person'. I feel bad for all those turkeys. In fact, Thanksgiving is the only time I eat turkey, and even then, it's not much. I'll probably go with another option after this year since I'm not that into meats. I eat more chicken than beef, turkey, and I don't eat fish and very rarely eat pork. I've thought about going vegetarian, but I've just been choosing vegetarian options without completely removing meat from my diet.
When it comes to holidays, I'm definitely more of a side-dish kind of person.
Anywhoo, Happy Holidays!!!

Don't feel bad, give your parrot a little sliver of Turkey. It's ok for them. A bird eating another bird of a different species and even genus is no more different than us eating a cow or a lion eating a zebra.

(....although the parrot would probably prefer a little stuffing or cranberries....IN MODERATION! ) :gcc:

Yeah, Java loves carbs, so I'm sure the stuffing and pasta will be on his Hit-list. Surprisingly, he's turned his beak up at eggs, chicken, and fish before, even though he's species requires animal-based protein. I have to sneak it into his birdie bread and even then, he finds a way to eat around it or chuck the entire thing onto the floor. I do worry about the seasonings since my sister used fresh garlic on the turkey. Will that still be okay? He'll only get a little bit.

To Brittany, and all I guess; according to this post from Monica http://www.parrotforums.com/parrot-...afe-fresh-foods-toxic-food-lists-sprouts.html (top post)

Garlic should be avoided.

From further research....

Garlic adds flavor to our dishes but it can cause problems in parrots. ... Garlic contains allicin, which in rare cases, can cause Heinz body hemolytic anemia in birds.

So I'd avoid it or......tiny amounts from the center of the meat far away from the seasoning.

Happy Thanksgiving! I'm thankful that a few years ago I had the chance to Kayak with friends and family before our feast!!! If I ever go into remission I hope to again! I'm cooking the bird this year for only the second time, I'm nervous!

Sorry I couldn't wait on the turkey they take so long to cook.....

(dont freak out!!! we do this all the time, clark doesn't mind it...I tease him all the time how I'm going to eat his wings and it just needs the hot sauce. Then he flippy-flutters his wings....because he only knows like 12 words of english.

The things you get away with, when your bird thinks it's people....)

Cairo the Ekkie!
Oh my goodness! Do enjoy a slice of pumpkin pie for this poor overseas American!! I do so miss the overload of turkey, candied yam, and cranberry sauce.

My (non-American) partner bought us a turkey this year as sort of a celebration that Cairo is doing better. I'm so excited to cook it this weekend as a belated Thanksgiving! Am hoping this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade will be on YouTube by then :)
