Hey guys-- wondering if anyone would know the FL breeder that bands under KA? Can't seem to find information about this breeder anywhere, which kind of makes sense if the age I was given for my Jenday was correct. Wish there was more information out there.

Oh I will! Didn't even know that group existed :D And yeah, I know. IDK why state AND year aren't like, just a standard metric. It only makes sense, considering how long-lived parrots are.

Hey, there, Morty...

I had good luck by canvassing all the bird clubs in the state in which I believed the Rb was from. He was still a chick when I bought him at a bird store, so age wasn't a question, but I really valued knowing his origin.

Good luck.

I can answer that; if a breeder orders bands with a specific year, and they order too many, those bands become useless to them in the new year. Some bands cost over a dollar each, and breeders see it as a waste.

I personally have year, state, my breeder code, and the bird number on my bands because I think all that info is important. Yes, i “waste money” on the leftover bands but to me it is worth it.

Makes sense, I guess I just assumed that'd be acceptable cost of business / down to foresight/planning... lol. I always forget other people don't always operate on that level.

Nope, they don’t. And keep in mind that most parrots in the USA are still produced in mill type settings where thousands of birds are being produced a year for wholesale purchase by stores like petco and petsmart (and nobody jump on me about how your favorite big box store has a great vet and loves their animals; I know the guy who provides the gccs for petco and he pumps out thousands of them a year). In the wholesale business you focus on keeping expenses low and output high since your profit margin per bird is low. You don’t care if 3 owners down the line someone can know the age of their bird, you just know that extra bands cost extra money and make extra hassle.

On the other hand some small Aviaries also have to punch pennies just to make ends meet because they take much better care of their birds and that is expensive. While we pump 20 times the money and time into our babies, customers expect us to charge LESS than a pet store and try to haggle and negotiate us down to a lower price. For small Aviaries spending an extra $50/year because you misjudged how many babies you would have can also be a big deal.

And then there are people who just don’t think it matters enough to bother with, or are new and don’t yet realize how important it is, etc.

The "KA" bands from Florida are from the huge aviary that PetSmart stores in the Southern region used to buy all of their baby birds from, there was just another post on here last month regarding a Nanday that came from the same place with the same leg band code...I'll see if I can go back in my history and find the post so I can give you the exact name of the place...They don't use it anymore, but did from the late 90's through around 2012, when they stopped selling the larger parrots due to the huge Psittacosis situation they and Petco had...That's why Petco no longer sells any birds larger than a Sun/Jenday Conure...I'll see if I can find it for you, I want to say it was called "Kaytee Aviary" or something like that. I don't know if it exists anymore, but it would put the hatch-date of your Jenday between around 1998 to 2010, and was originally purchased from a PetSmart store in the Southern Region.

Ahhh makes sense. Kaytee, is that any relation to the garbage pet food brand I wonder?
Given that, his age as I was informed does seem to fall in line. This is a great step forward in information, thank you so much. I assume they shipped them all the way up here to NY even, as my little GCC is from Hurricane Aviary down there in FL, and I bought him from our PetCo here in town. Interesting.
