Okay, so I've been trying to find out for years what this thing is called. You know how parrots have fleshy cheek pads in the corners of their mouth? You know, those fleshy things that remind you of the cheek membranes from the T-Rex in Jurassic Park. What the heck are they called?

Here you go:

According to Wikipedia: In bird anatomy, the gape flange is the region where the two mandibles join together at the base of the beak.

All are rescues- had to leave their previous homes for 'reasons', are still in contact with them :)
I just refer to them as "the corners of the mouth".
Everybody sort of knows what you are talking about.

Nothing like learning something new everyday.
What has interested me is just how much differences there is species to species. As some seem to have little to none and other have a larger area. Likely driven by the food sources and types available as part of their diet.

Gape Flange!

I absolutely LOVE knowing that.

Oh, and if you look closely, on the inside, the Rb's gape flange is stained a permanent green from all the peppers he eats.

Gape Flange. I Googled it and learned there are all kinds of variations associated with species, age, etc. I guess if birds wore lipstick, it would go there.

Yep, totally had this happen. I freaked out when his 'gape flange' was all red  I thought he was bleeding somewhere inside his mouth! I kept trying to see inside, and he kept squirming his head away, like "Ma. Please. Not in public." It took me a good 15 minutes to realise why it was that colour before I could calm down - I had given Cairo a red bell pepper (capsicum) and carrots as a foraging toy earlier that morning :p silly human!
