We had a MASSIVE storm last night, around 9:30. We lost power for a few seconds, it came back and then poof, gone. Salty was still on his daytime playground, and since we sh*tcanned all the candles, we had to try and find flashlights in the dark. Then I heard the flutter of his wings, and we all stopped dead in our tracks because we couldn;t see a thing and we couldn't see Salty.

I found a pen light and retrieved him from the floor, but it was a close call. Moral - keep a flashlight near your parrots cage or playground area, for just such an emergency.

The perks of modern technology. Since majority of people carry smart phones now and they normally have flashlights and if they don't a phone screen is still pretty bright. Still definitely good to have flashlights with fresh batteries in case of emergencies.

We had a bad round of storms go through here too.
Try some of the battery backup nightlights from the big box stores.
They have a light sensor so they come on when dark and will act as a battery backup light when the power fails. Some also can be used as a flashlight.
Place them at various places in your home.
Lithium batteries and LED lamps make it long lasting and economical.

Totally agree - I buy the smaller tactical flashlights and have them all over the house, end tables, bathroom, mantle, kitchen drawer, bird area, near the tv, etc. I don’t always have my phone on my person, and have learned to always have a flashlight within easy reach :).

I like the "tactical" and second that not having phone at hand! We had a kaboom that woke me to lights out not to long ago. Thought I can stumple to the living room were I have a flashlight, nope it was so dark!
Good reminder Wrench! Glad salty was ok, I think going to the floor was good instincts for him.
Looking at the potential tropical development in Florida, getting my stuff ready, I keep travel cages by the cage. With a head lamp, so I can be hands free and clutch me fids!

Nothing like the loss of Power (especially at night) to awaken the need to update 'be prepared mode.'
We are connected to the second largest power providing utility in Michigan. And darn near the lowest regarding reliability.

With good luck your electric was restored quickly!

Okay, I know there's a spotlight on my phone but I don't know how to find it. That will change as of NOW. I always have my phone at hand, so that should work. Thanks, Wrenchie!

Glad Salty was safe. I would have probably dropped to my hands and knees to search if it was pitch black and a bird on the loose as I’d imagine it would be harder to have an accident that way. A good call on a flashlight nearby though! Our utility closet is right next to Kiwis cage so the flashlight is easy to grab.

Curious if Salty is usually scared of thunder and lightning? Kiwi gets energized by it. Starts ruffling his feathers, pinning his eyes and acting excited. Maybe because he was (presumably) hatched and lived for around 15 years in AZ where we got severe summer monsoons every year with plenty of thunder/lightning?

I can't say that Salty even notices storms, unlike our dog Tinker, who goes into fits, slobbering and shaking at the merest sign of rain.

Due to the lack of reliability in our power provider there are flashlights in multiple places in every room.
I'm glad Salty is alright.

A few years back,Wally-Mart had a sale going on for those little, different colored, aluminum bodied LED flash lights. They had a ten-pack for about $30. I bought two! There is two flash lights in every room! That was a good point Al!
Glad to hear Salty was ok. Storms don't seem to bother my kids.
My buddy Harold had a HUGE lovable Mallamute doggo and when it stormed Harold would find the terrified pup cowering behind the toilet trembling in fear! the poor pup.
