Re: Ornithology

Parrots being perceived attractive by humans, increases conservation efforts. While leaving less room for less known, or less colorful species.. I've been searching for the one on parrot mate bonds that I mentioned to a member. This one came up because of long parrot life, leading to less room at Zoos for other breeding pairs. Tricky....

Re: Ornithology

It's a slow night, trying to find parrot protein article. But instead found one on Amazon parrots specific diet study. Blue fronted Amazon's and Yellow shoulder Amazon seemed to have slightly different diet needs. First half focused on pellet and veggies/ fruit diet zero seeds.. results weren't optimal for blue fronted Amazon's hmm
Diet Research Amazon Parrots Article

This next one is an actual study of foraging and consumption of wild parrots in the rainforest of South America. Very interesting.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3367951/#!po=30.2198
I like how they call parrots "seed predators" and I think the protein content was 54% when they did diet analysis. Note this study didn't follow year round diet selection and food sources.

What a fantastic idea! I spend (uh...let's not actually admit this in specific hours) "a lot" of time looking for various articles such as this. How nice to combine our efforts. Funny thing is, I just read the one on primate/parrot "evolution of intelligence" and the one on parrots "naming" their offspring within the last 2 weeks! I'll have to hunt down the links and share the other articles that were super interesting!

What do you think about... "psittalogy"?:D There exists science about all birds (ornithology), also breeding parrots has own name (psittaculture), why there isn't science about parrots?:D

Thank you Wrench for all your donations!! It touches me so deeply when I see you make a donation in a Parrots name. What a fabulous idea you came up with to do that. What a touching way to show support. Cornell University is outstanding, they are a leader in ornithology!!! You can also visit their online nest , watch. They have lots of info on our native birds, free nest box blue prints, online bird identification, and conservation. Cornell is a leader in avain veterinary medicine, and clinical pathology, and labatory testing. You couldn't have picked a better organization to donate to! Thank you on behalf of my parrots.

Re: Ornithology

Cornell just sent me a nice thank you letter for past donations. Kind of a sweet and sour thing, becasue I know its going to a great university, but then i remember why I started and continue to make the donations n the first place - to memorialize the passing of a loved parrot, an let the parront know that their babies will not be forgotten. This year has been relatively quiet, thank God; 2018 saw so many of our members loosing one of their babies.

My late brother wanted to be a vet,and Cornell was going to be his alma mater, but he passed away before he could realize that dream.

I love this thread - there are so many aspects of parrot ownership that can be explored to the betterment of our understanding of them, thanks for creating it.

I'm sorry you lost your brother, and I'm glad you are keeping his dream alive. Your donations touch us all, and improve the lives of parrots.

Re: Ornithology

Believe was published in 2012 If you like wading through data, this is a link to life span research of captive parrots in zoos.
Scroll to the end to the summary.
Take away for me cockatoos live the longest , with oldest recorded individual at 90 years, but the mean avarage of 50. Amazon's average 25 years. Most other parrots average 20 regardless of size of species. Also noted lifespans are increasing due to better husbandry.

Re: Ornithology

Stress in the parrot.
A really great comprehensive article!!!
Of note to me, The morning ritual, I mentioned this to many people experience problems with their parrots, screaming, unhappiness.
Talks about how most pet store birds have been forced weaned, and not allowed to fledge. Talks about hand feeding. I do this every day at least once. Personally feel it enriches the parrot human bond. Teaches them to try new foods. Article talks about the importance of rituals. Of observation. Just a great all around article..

Re: Ornithology

Posted in a thread but worth having here.
Excerpt: Learning to fly well is the most complicated and important task a parrot can learn. Flighted parrots are healthier, more active, more coordinated, and have much better vision. Flying promotes higher intelligence, self-confidence, self-esteem and ultimately makes a more social long-term companion.
Importance of fledging!!!!

And a follow up pro flight in adult birds , Benefits explained.
