What kind of parront are you?

Love it - I probably hover between authoritative and indulgent....

I was authoritarian for the first couple years. But when i learned more about permission based training and what it does for trust, that eased squarely to authoritative.

same---pretty authoritative but with a few helicopter tendencies when it comes to health issues.

I’m also between authoritative and indulgent with a pinch of neglect. I don’t force Perry to eat as many veggies as he should and can’t help but reward the fella with a pine nut or two probably too often.

Authoritarian - Only with step up. If I ask one of my birds I expect the step up to happen & them to listen. No arguing or biting. Mostly this is because sometimes I’m trying to move them away from danger quickly & its a habit I want ingrained & them to know I won’t waver on it, so it’s the one thing I don’t let them argue about or decide on ever. Otherwise I don’t care what they are doing & don’t care if they don’t want to sit with me or anything. They fly to me when they want attention or if you are Titan literally stick your beak in my face & if that doesn’t work plop in front of the iPad & stick his beak in my face while making kissing sounds lol

I definitely don’t fit indulgent haha & definitely not helicopter. You better not be bothering me 24/7...go play in your box or buzz the other birds or stalk other people in the house while threatening them...

I’m negligent when it comes to fresh foods. It’s seriously the one thing I have a problem with doing consistently. I’ll be good for a month & then it tapers off for months. Plenty of toys and out and everything else but I’m really bad with the fresh foods. It’s not even a time issue I’m just bad about it.

Probably mainly authoritative. I like boundaries but not insanely crazy about it!

With great fortune I knew Liz Wilson. She was a true leader in the huge World of Companion Parrots. I have one of the booklets that houses the collection of her works. This reminds me that I need to dig it back out.

What kind of Parront am I. None on those listed. As an individual who long ago learned that with Amazons - they run the show! And no matter what type of Parront personality one thinks they are their Amazon defines what, when and how! All the definitions have merit right up to the point of implementation.

Nice try 'experts,' but life with an Amazon just does not fit the definition all the well.

Now, those of you who are bless to have a Grey that allows you in their home, you can likely add greatly...

I lean towards indulgent. I don't mind if Rocco chews the occasional baseboard or door frame. It gives me an excuse to play with my power tools, which I enjoy. His cage is open all day, so he spends a lot of time on my couch which is where I have an assortment of toys for him. I give him a combination of pellets, mixed veggies, nutri-berries, and a few cashews every day.

Occasionally I share my people food with him, depending on what it is. Once he was helping me eat my stuffed peppers, and he started caressing my cheek with his beak. How cute! I didn't realize until I went to the bathroom that he was actually painting my face with the tomato sauce.

A hybrid of indulgent and authoritative.

I used to work with horses in the 80's. A time when hair was very important, as some if you rember, perms, hair spray, long hair for the Rock n roll dudes.

So if it was a day that a certain horse wouldn't cooperate. We'd say they were having a bad hair day! And just let them be. It was a way of excepting that our fellows can have an off day. Maybe other creatures get headaches or what not

I try to let my parrots have a respectful day off , if they are having a bad feather day.

I learned during a bad case of flu, that turned out was pneumonia last year, that I'd been to indulgent. See I'm a stay at home parront, so the parrots are out the whole day. Well when I was so sick I had to leave them caged ......the screaming never stopped hour after hour after hour never a single second of quiet....... For my four sickest days , that I just couldnt let tmem out at all, never ever, ever , ever stopped. I had plenty of time to think how am I going to fix this?;?

Once I got well I started having my birds be cages for at least 2 hours during the day. I made sure that when it was cage time they had a good snack, something new to shred ECT... It took a few weeks before everyone caught in to the new routine. Now I think they enjoy having a bit of space , a time to chill, or work on their cage toys.
Now it's a great time for me to have peace and quiet, watch a movie , read. And a recent cold that have me off my game for a day, they did pretty good, some grumbles.

My other rules are no furniture unless they are sitting with me. No messing with the dogs. No parrots are allowed on the floor. No bites, pinches are allowed within reason. I don't make them step up. I ask. I'd say it's 1 in 200 that I'm am refused a step up. I don't even say step up I put my hand up they step up, on the very rare refuse they walk away, or for Penny she pushes my hand away.
They have a deep trust for me, that I try never to break. They will step to a new person if I have them on me first and then have the new person put a hand up. They usually won't stay and come right back to me but they are willing.
