Nike is always surprising me.

Nike a Hawk Head Parrot (Deroptyus accipitrinus)
So over the years I've tried every Nutri-Berries version available and have spent over $100 in doing so and each bag of them was tossed in the garbage when they sat around long enough to go stale because I've actually never seen Nike eat even one of them.

Last week I was on Amazon and decided that it was time to waste more money on her and ordered a bag of the Sunny orchard variety. They came in the mail today and I dropped one in her food bowl.

I came back in the room a minute later and there she was holding and actually eating (as in not just crushing it and dropping it) the Nutri-Berries. I watched her until she finished the entire treat and then handed her another one which she readily took and continued eating it until there was nothing left.

I am determined to wait until she is continuously accepting it as a treat before I buy another bag......and then do I buy the same one or try another? I'm just doing this to add to the variety of her food.

I have no suggestions, just wanted you to know that I laughed (from understanding) when you said “decided to waste more money on her.” Ahhh the little devils.

Thanks Inger, no suggestions were really solicited. I could probably make a car payment with what I've wasted on food and toys. ;)

Too true!
I take unwanted pellet types and add to oat meal or add to bird corn muffins.

If they are still rejected I give em to the squirrels :)

We have a hawkhead baby at a pet store near me. Truely and incredible Parrot. If I didn't have millions of birds already, and had a spare 3,599 dollars I'd be tempted big time!

Sounds like she has a favorite treat in the making!!!

I have made it a fast rule to never count the cost of untried foods and hated toys. That said, we disassemble the toys and include the pieces and parts into other toys. The food, we add to our neighbor's wild bird feeder.

Laurasea, if you don't mind, I'd live a pic of it the next time you visit that store.

You know, I was browsing youtube for new Hawkhead parrot videos and this woman from a rescue had an episode on Hawkheads. She runs a Senegal rescue and apparently doesn't have a kind word to say about Hawkheads. She talks a lot about the bird she's holding displaying aggressive behavior. Nike acts like that that all the and it is not aggression it's happy excitement. It took Nike almost 3 years to warm up to us enough to act like that, If that bird was being aggressive believe me, there would be blood.

It is true that they are territorial which is why having one and other birds is probably not a good idea and why Nike does get apprehensive when someone other than my wife and I are around her but that is also likely mostly a lack of socialization since it's 99% just us with her.

By the way, Nike's "re-home" fee was $600....I thought it was a steal.

I am on Nutri-berries top friend of the week list almost every week! As a thank you, they sent me a box of everything they carry! My JoJo doesn’t like any of them! Fortunately, the wife’s Bongo does! FYI, our dogs love them!

Our Fids can be finicky sometimes. We tried the Nutri-berries with Arika early on and she wanted no part of them.

A word of caution, I seem to recall some one on the forum mentioned that they discovered the possibility excessive vitamin intake if they are given too many. I believe it may have been an Eclectus parront. If anyone else recalls seeing this information please let us know.

Perry enjoys nutriberries in his daily diet as well did Timneh. We switch around the varieties and it definitely makes a difference to them. Timneh mainly looked for safflower seeds but perry will usually eat quite a bit more and sometimes every last crumb which actually takes a while. Some have more pellets in them than others also. I didn’t know about the extra vitamins I think I might give lafeber a call and ask them directly as Perry eats 4 or 5 of these a day sometimes less sometimes more. I’ll keep you posted.

I hear ya Bill.
I've had Levi 3 years this past Aug. I've offered him Nutriberries & Avicakes from the beginning. He only started to eat them a couple of months ago and now he LOVES them. I usually buy the ones with the higher percentage of pellets. He still refuses the Avicakes. You just never know. :D

I do recall at least a couple of Threads in which Nutri-berries are stated as provide excessive vitamin intake. It is likely why it is so important that the majority of the diet is based around Natural Fresh Foods. It is important to remember that the same has been said regarding an all pellet diet. As with us Humans, a wide and varied healthy diet is best. Now, if only I could only convince myself of that statement. :D

Love that! The essence of parronting, right? Gave me a great chuckle!
