Hey there! If you look at my history you will see I was here a long time ago looking into birds and such.

Sadly, I still have yet to be in the right place to have a bird.

Good news is though, I got a house!!!

Bad news...I share it with my mom lol (thanks economy!)

I am back on my mission for a bird though! I have definitely narrowed my list/interests as my research never really stopped, but I also still have many questions. I have a year (or even 2) to get the cage and everything ready due to other projects that take financial priority though. So I am dubbing 2021 YEAR OF THE BIRD!

That being said the birds that are on my list include...

*Galah Cockatoo (kind of a far stretch due to price)
*Cockatiel
*Blue Capped Conure

Out of these 3 it's the BCC I am striving for the most I believe. I wanted just 1 bird though in all honesty I may still end up with 2 (a tiel being one of them!)

Since the last time I posted it seems the local bird world around me is dieing off however. No local breeders, the one store that seemed to always have a variety has only been carrying the usual chain store type birds, and there don't seem to be any rescues near me either. I am feeling a bit at a loss about that sadly. The one good thing is that twice a year there is a HUGE exotics pet expo that happens and they usually have some awesome birds and amazing people!

So I guess this thread will be 'Bird Journal 2.0' as I re-embark on my bird journey!

It IS hard, but I have a lot to keep me distracted for 2020. Also, I have already waited like...5ish years already...What's 1 more? LOL.

Amy a Blue Front 'Zon
Jonesy a Goffins 'Too who had to be rehomed :-(

And a Normal Grey Cockatiel named BB who came home with me on 5/20/2016.
Where are you located? There is a great place here in CT that I got BB from (Cockatiel) and they have many others. They have a website "Parrots&Company"

I think it is absolutely admirable that you are waiting if you cannot responsibly house one--living with someone who isn't willing to make the appropriate lifestyle changes is definitely a reason to wait!

I am in the middle TN area.

As for my mom, she keeps telling me "DON'T get a bird!!!" And I keep reminding her it WILL happen because the agreement of me continuing to live with her is that I can have 'whatever' I want so long as I can afford it and house it (properly). So I will be reminding her regularly that this is going to happen lol. She doesn't have to like it, she doesn't have to help or interact (beyond basic socialization to ensure there's no aggression). It's my space, my time, and my money. She practically begged me to stay with her when I found a place that did accept my application a few years ago and that was when I laid it out that I am an adult and while I will respect her space, I won't limit my personal goals. Unfortunately all my goals are animal related. I have given up a lot, and will probably have to give up even more before getting a bird, so it's going to happen. However, I also want to make sure that it happens in the best way for the animal and myself as well as respectfully towards my mom while still achieving my goals!

She literally couldn't afford the place without me now since I pay for half of everything. Including the water system, new floors, gutters, landscaping, utilities, ect. I'm no free loader, and neither is she. We have to work together and I realize that, but I also don't want to make it a goal of waiting till she dies to get a bird...that is just morbid to even think about seeing she is also my best friend...but also, I feel that would severely taint my affection for the animal.

Anyway!!! That was a weird babbling rant...Sorry...lol

If she doesn't do her own shopping, then you are good, but if she will be buying her own personal-care products, cleaners, cooking materials etc, candles, hair dyes etc then it will impact any potential bird...It sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders, but just keep that in mind..Also-- what are the "new floors" made of, because they may need a period of off-gassing (not trying to be a party-pooper....just saying)..

They are the vinyl floors and were put in early summer and I wont be getting a bird till 2021 or later, so definitely will be done gassing lol.

As for her own products, we use vinegar based cleaner anyway. The only thing she will have to give up will be air sprayers. But I will take care of that by purchasing all bird safe products and probably some air purifiers as well. We already use the ceramic non-stick pans and other cookware as well. Litterally the only air hazard will be the scent spray things.
