It's soot.... from a burnt tree.... not a mutation. In short, just nesting in a burnt hollow.

Here's one from at least 13 years ago?

LOL! Clearly the bird has nested alone, then, since no others are suffering from the same condition. :)

Well, it seems the university boffins think it's a melanistic bird and it has been followed and studied for some years. The presence of melanin in the skin doesn't necessarily preclude the continued presence of other colour pigments.

It is melanistic, not from soot
A great mate of mine bred a melanistic galah 2 years ago and looked exactly like that one

I would post a photo.......but he's one of those 'Really private' breeders that are strictly no photos sorry (and I can't blame him for that, he has a lot of rarer species and has had attempted robberies a couple times)
I went to his place for an aviary tour, and looked into one aviary and here it was in all its glory (he didn't want to acknowledge it was there, so I had to pry it out of him to tell me a bit about it).

He also had a number of Blue and Lutino mutation Galahs as well

You know I thought you'd say something like that Noah. But you can't blame a girl for trying!

Yeah, its a shame when those really private breeders usually have such tight restrictions on who visits them and what they make public.....but ah well if he displays it in one of the magazines I know who to send the pic to!

I, too, would love to see a melanistic bird from a breeder! Would be great to compare *that* bird to one of the wild ones!
