My babies hatched!!!

Hi everyone! Today I came home from MA. I had expected my finch eggs to hatch when I got back. I checked the nest and could hear tinny little peeps! I looked and there was one tinny little chick begging and peeping

! I'm so excited I have been trying to successfully breed my finches for months and it finally worked! It's an itty bitty society finch. there should be more, I'll find out tomorrow! Also, there are four adults all in the same nest, is this a threat to the babies?

Congrats Ann! My finch breeding experience isn't super extensive but from the few clutches I did have, I never had a problem with other adults being in the same cage as long as each pair has access to their own nest. I really don't think you'll have much of a problem, society finches are great to start with, they are terrific parents and very laid back with each other. That's why so many people use them to foster the chicks of other finches such as gouldian's who often won't sit and feed their own babies

Good luck and keep us posted. Are you going to hand feed them or let the parents raise them out?

As long as the cage is large enough to house all of them, it shouldn't be an issue. Although once the chicks are old enough and eating on their own, you should house them in a separate cage as the pair will try to breed again and the male will chase away the chicks, even killing them.

thank you! I bought the societies for my gouldians (and as an excuse to get another bird

). I had thought about hand feeding for a while, and its something i want to do eventually. For now i will see how they do, but i am considering taking over after 10 days. I also want to know how because my societies have pushed eggs before, so i don't know if they would push babies

Im shocked at how big he is, i thought the babies were much smaller, but this guys a chubby one! i can see a full crop so hes doing ok

. Also, whats the normal color for healthy babies? hes like a dark pink.

. right now im waiting for the rest of them to hatch. there were 3 eggs, i can only find 1? i don't know where the other one went, its not on the floor, it could just be tucked away. I hope they all hatch, I'm supposed to be giving one to my friend, but i still want to keep one lol. My hope is that one will be a fawn mutation or another chestnut self, time will tell

Have you considered hand raising any of the finches

A hand raised completely tame finch is the cutest thing ever, I almost bought one from a breeder(breeders usually hand raise them by commission only) but decided not to.

i have considered it, i am planning to with this clutch. If i cant get the supplies in time, i will handle them while they are young. I also almost bought a tame one, it was adorable! I will try to tame them, i am giving one to my best friend for her birthday. shes like my sister and knows how to take care of them, so it will be in good hands

id love to! i will try to take pictures in the nest until i pull them for feeding. once i take over the process, i will record it

. this baby is so precious! hes so perfectly pink, beautifully tiny, and i cant wait to see how he grows up! I will check the nest tomorrow to see if the rest hatched.

the other egg is hatching

i can see it shaking and rolling! it has been cracked since yesterday. how long does it take for them to hatch, I'm beginning to wonder if I should help him open it?

Congradulations on your tiny little miracle! If the other egg still has not hatched within 14 to sixteen days of laying, and the baby inside is chirping loudly and dry, you could gently chip at the egg with a toothpick. Try not to intervene unless absolutly possible, it is good neck exersise for a newborn chick. Try to get pictures of the little ones!
