IRN Cage Size?

Hi everyone,

I've tried to search the site for this topic, but the results that come up don't seem appropriate, so I figured I'd ask directly. We're getting an IRN in a couple of months (already have a GCC). What would be the best or minimum cage size to get? Most cages seem to be much taller than wide, as many have said before. Also, would an IRN use a playtop on a cage or would that be a waste of money?

Some good advice from Indianringneck.com:
Choosing a proper cage is essential for a happy and healthy parrot. Indian Ringnecks are extremely active and are very playful. Their cages need to be easy to clean and easy to dismantle for proper cleaning. The cage should be able to house toys, your parrot, and many perches comfortably. An Indian Ringneck can live many years and the cage needs to be durable and safe.

When choosing a cage for your Indian Ringneck you need to take into consideration the tail. The size of the cage should always be as large as your budget can afford and as large as your room can accommodate. Indian Ringnecks in particular enjoy spacious cages and will make use of any excess room they have. Your parrot should be able to turn around, flap his wings, hop form perch to perch, and play with his toys without touching the bars of the cage.

A good cage will also have doors that will allow your hands to enter the cage without trouble. If your parrot needs to be retrieved this will greatly reduce any stress, especially if your Indian Ringneck was not handfed. The cage should have at least three doors. Two should be used for food and water and one as the main entrance. Most doors have clips, so once the bowls are securely placed into position they cannot wiggle or move.

I have my IRN in a cage that is taller than it is wide, but it's still very wide. She also has a boing rope which makes use of the vertical space.
I think your IRN would love an open cage top. I don't have an open cage top but mine LOVES sitting on the top of the cage...so I would say go for it

Great - thanks for the help! No, we won't be getting it until mid to late May - they hatched last week, I believe. I haven't even gotten pics yet - all I know is that it will be blue! I know you can tell the gender by the ring, which comes out between 18 months and 3 years, but is there any other telltale sign that you know of? With our GCC, we haven't had her sexed, but by her nesting behaviours and a physical trick I found online, we know she's female.

I don't think there is any way to know, other than a DNA test. The breeder can sometimes tell you though, because some colour combinations will produce a male or female of a particular colour! So hopefully your breeder might at least be able to make a guess

Awesome! I'm also getting a blue IRN at the end of May! I'm super excited. The cage I purchased is this one:

I bought it for $390, and thankfully I got it when I did because now it's crazy expensive! Your cage also looks quite fabulous

I personally stay away from play top cages because of cleaning reasons, and I also have a cat tree that I'm modifying for my GCC and future IRN.

I'm excited for both of us!
