I'm getting a Ringneck

I finally found one. I can't believe it. They are ready in about ten weeks. Breeder thinks there is two green and a blue. The presumed blue is mine.

Oh cute! Even at that funny looking stage they're adorable Congratulations! The blue are really pretty, though I find all the IRN colors beautiful, even the normal greens.

Are Ringnecks hard to find there?

Thanks. I like all the Ringneck mutations too, but the blue ones are absolutely beautiful.

No, not really. In some parts of the UK they are a wild bird. The ones you find for sale are usually clipped adult females that people are selling as "babies". Finding a good breeder was difficult. I didn't want to travel too far to get one either, so I'm happy that I found a good breeder that wasn't too far.

People selling females as babies?!! oh no! Terrible that it's common practice too! I'm glad you found a GOOD breeder, and close by.

It happens all the time. They are clearly not babies because the lower mandible is black and they don't have the dark eyes that babies have.

I've also seen people selling "tame" Ringnecks and on the advert they would say "they are so tame you can take them outside without them flying off" when really the birds CAN'T fly because they have their wings clipped, but people buying the birds don't know that. They think the bird they're getting is so tame that they can take it anywhere without it flying away.

So when the bird's wings grow out after a while and they take it outside as normal thinking it still won't ever fly away, they then lose their bird because it's wings had grew out but they hadn't noticed.

They would have the sort of wing clip that looks like they aren't actually clipped, the one that leaves one or two outer primaries, so if the bird's wings grew back you wouldn't notice unless you extended it's wings. Completely wrong.

I remember watching a documentary on them and hearing their second UK name, "the posh pigeon", haha! My boyfriend's grandparents are up from the UK and they've never seen them, but they live in Stockton Onteese (did I spell that right?).

I'm so excited that things finally worked out and you got your ringneck! Now we can both rely on each other for handling and training, hehe Update with pictures! I love watching them grow. And speaking of growing, your flock is getting significantly larger as the weeks pass! I'm jealous!

I haven't heard them called that before. Stockton-on-tees is pretty near where I am. In the north east there aren't any wild Ringnecks, so they wouldn't see any. They are mostly in the south east. I haven't ever seen any kind of wild parrots here.

Yeah, if you ever need some advice on training Shiko, I'll give some advice, I know a lot about training, but I don't think you will need my help with him, he seems like a sweet bird already. And if he has already been doing recall, I think you're doing great with him. I haven't gotten Merle to do anything yet. But I am still converting him to pellets. Maybe I just need to find his favorite treat.

Only reason I am getting one is because I nagged my parents until they said yes. I wanted one pretty badly. They're my dream bird, and I couldn't miss out on such a good breeder.

I must have multiple bird syndrome. I think this will be my last bird though. At least for a while. I need to restrain myself from now on. I will have one more bird than my mother when I get my Ringneck. She will have two, I will have three. Don't be jealous when you have the incredibly beautiful Shiko.

It was disappointing the bird turned out to be a green Ringneck. I was beginning to think you would never get the bird of your dreams. Hope Cloud is everything you have hoped for, he is gorgeous.
