With a new bird the best thing to do is to take him to a vet for a all round checkup which is what I've just done and the vet will give you a huge amount of information on his nutritional needs etc..

i read your last thread and see the pictures. have you upgraded his cage yet? have you been giving him attention? talking to him etc?

I'm still a newbie myself but i can pass on the information I've learnt already :)

try finding his favourite treat and leaving it out the cage maybe he will have a wonder outside.. oh and drinking.. I rarely see Marley drink, if the bird eats a lot of fruit i doubt it drinks as much but they do drink so make sure the water is changed regular (2-3 times daily)

keep us posted :) (with pics)

HI there. Congrats on your new bird. I can see that you want to do what is best for your bird. The first most important thing you need to do right now is to offer a greater variety of foods, I saw in your other pic that you were offering fruit, which is good every second day or so in addition to his pellets, but you need to get a good pellet to him ASAP. Also offer some vegetables like broccoli, carrots, etc on a daily basis. If possible, phone the shop he came from and find out what they fed him there, this is what he would identify as food right now. Then over time you can wean him onto a good pelleted diet if he is not used to it yet.

Secondly, do you know if this is a hand tame bird to begin with? If so, it will still take time for Kiwi to feel safe before he will open up to you. You are going to need lots of patience.

Next thing, a bigger cage will be nice. For him to be able to have a bigger place to call his own. :)

I would also suggest covering his cage at night, especially if that light behind him stays on during the night.

I hope this helps.

I thought you were going to use THIS cage?

The pink one looks too small to me.

And NO, please don't give Kiwi anything with added salt.

While the fumes are dangerous, painting it with paint that isn't specifically designed for bird cages leaves other dangers of ingestion for Kiwi, and that could be very fatal.

Kiwi is running from you because he is scared of you. He doesn't trust you and he sees you as someone that may very well try to eat him. If you move quickly or get too close and try to restrict him, you're reaffirming that feeling for him. You may have good intentions, but birds aren't mind readers and they need reassurance and trust that you build over time. It's not an immediate thing. It sounds very much so that your bird is NOT tame and that it will take quite some time to tame him down. And even if you do tame him, there's a high possibility he will never want to be cuddled, only step up or be on your shoulder.

You need to be slow, deliberate, and very clear in your behaviour around Kiwi. How would you feel if you were placed in a small room with glass walls and some strange, scary giant kept putting their face up to the wall? It would likely terrify you unless you knew that giant wasn't going to do something terrible to you and wanted to treat you kindly. You have to make a positive association with your presence. We have a lot of threads about trust building and healthy food options that I suggest you look into for Kiwi's benefit and so you can build a good relationship with him.

The danger lays in Kiwi potentially chewing on the cage bars, breaking off paint chips and eating them by accident. Is there a specific reason as to why you need to paint it?

Over time, with a healthier diet, and a larger cage, his feathers will improve. Spend time in the same room your bird is in. He is watching you, being very wary. Show him you are not scary by talking to him in a low voice, and try to just give him some space for a few days. Your home is still a very new and scary place for him to be. Birds can take quite a while before they settle in and become comfortable.

Had I just be patient. My cockatiel wad bought tame. It still took 2 weeks for me to touch him. He only started singing a few days ago. I let him come out on his own. He spent 2 hours on my shoulder today a dhe was happy. Singing, preening, stealing food :). Accepting and asking me to rub his head. When I put him back he hissed at me and tried to bite. Silly bird. :)

Did you get her back in the cage yet? If this a untamed bird you might have to take her to a vet to have her wings clipped to start off with. Chasing a bird around your home is not going to help in taming it at all. But please do not try to do this yourself if you have no experience. If she is still outside the cage, lifting the cage to her with the door open might entice her to get back in. This worked on my budgie when he escaped a couple of times.
