Sounds like Kiwi was just taking advantage of the quiet time to take a nap or go back to sleep...our birds will do this throughout the day, though we often don't realize it.....

Good luck.....

Often times, when birds are very new, they are on 'alert' ALL the time. As they settle in, most parrots are kind of lazy things who nap during the day. The grinding the beak is often a sign of contentment:) Keep an eye on him, but it sounds like he's settling into your home and catching up on some 'much needed' rest.

Thats the morning flock call. Parrots do that to call out for everyone else to get up or to keep track that everyone is there.

The ones on youtube might have been taught to mimic songs, so thats why they're more melodic.

Lol. Not every bird has a beautiful voice (just like how not every person is destined to be a singer). I think it is especially true for many captive breds who spend very little time around adults of their species or may never encounter a wild counterpart to 'lean' from. I grew up around a wild caught amazon who made the most beautiful, pleasant, almost melodic range of endless vocalizations. Her captive bred 'mate' didn't vocalize frequently, but made similar noises to her (in hindsight, he probably learned from her).

I kind of assumed those vocalizations were kind of an "inherent quality" of amazons and that our Kiwi would vocalize in a similar way. Unfortunately, he only has a limited range of really weird and creepy noises he makes, and 'pretty' or 'melodic' are not the words that come to mind lol:31: Perhaps since your Kiwi is so young, you could play her some of the birds calls who you do think are pretty and he might pick them up:)

Hello Jado, I'm sorry I do not have an answer for you about why Kiwi has been doing what she has been, other than to say it certainly looks like you have a true conundrum on your hands, and one that has confounded men of the world for centuries...why women/females do what they do ! ! !

I hope someone can help you find an answer to your question and since I don't know your native language, I truly hope that there is a translation for my post, but I fear it will be a question left to the ages.....

I do wish you good luck in your search for understanding.....

This sounds like she is starting to recognize you :) And it is NOT (as suggested by...others:20:) because she is a female that she is quiet when you are there and calls out when you aren't. In nature when a bird doesn't see a "flock member" it will call out to try and locate it's friend or mate, which is why she calls out for you when you leave. When she can see you, she knows your safe and calms down. In time, she'll learn that you always come back, so she can calm down after a minute when you leave and go back to what she was doing. Remember that parrots (even if born in captivity) are not domestic animals. They still very much have wild instincts so things like screaming when you leave the room aren't to drive us humans nuts (or because of the birds gender:rolleyes:), to the bird, they feel they are being a good flock member trying to find you:).

And if she's starting to recognize you now, that means she's probably ready to start more trust building exercises with. Does she accept food from your hand yet? Has she shown any interest in toys? Both can be used to gain trust with a bird to eventually lead up to her stepping not your hand. And remember, your going at her pace. If you let her come to trust you in her own time, you will have a very happy and strongly bonded bird in time.

O no:( I am so sorry she's escaped. I believe there are several threads on the best ways to find a lost parrot.

If I were you I would, BEFORE going out and buying another bird

1) Invest in a bigger cage
2) Make some toys
3) Ensure the screen is fixed in a way so that the next bird can't 'escape' in the same way

I know she may not be super tame, but I still think you should look for her. She *may* be stuck in a tree or if you put her cage outside with some food, she may come back to what she knows.

Put the cage outside, door open, with food in it. She's likely going to get hungry at some point and just maybe will come looking for what she's become accustomed to eating. She may also return to "roost" where she's used to sleeping. If she does come back, get her a new cage more appropriate for her size ASAP. That's a cage for a budgie, not an alexandrine. Cage manufacturers design cages to be difficult to escape from based on the intended size of bird who should live in one. The reason she escaped with ease is she is big and strong enough to easily open a door a budgie sized bird would find difficult. A cage made for a bigger bird in mind would likely have a more complex latch and/or place for a good, sturdy padlock. I do really hope you can find her though.
