Taming an IRN

I have an opportunity to get a female IRN that was hatched in February, hand fed but not hand tamed (didn't sell). How long would you expect it to take to have her reasonably tamed?

An extremely long time. IRNs are notoriously difficult to tame, and they don't follow the rules of most birds for taming. If you do get one, here are some tips.

Don't clip the wings. I can go more into it later if you want, but clipping the wings of a wild IRN does a lot to sabotage trust efforts and heighten paranoia in your bird.

Take your fingers out of the equation. Whenever possible use a fist and hide your fingers until your bird is "tame to your fist" and trusts it, then slowly introduce fingers. It's a weird IRN finger phobia thing.

But seriously, if you want a tame IRN, I highly suggest buying one that already is. Most people are NOT up for the challenge of taming one, and many will never become tame no matter what you do, especially females.

I think I agree with you in regards to buying one that is already tame. I've polled folks and the consensus is "a long time" or "never truly tamed".

i love IRNs, I have 10 of them myself. I love them too much to sugar coat them or pretend they are a way that they are not. If you want a bird to be tame, this isnt a good option. And a wild IRN isnt the same as a wild other parrot; even a hand raised one is likely to fling herself all over the cage in a wild attempt to save herself every morning when you feed her if they neglected to keep her tame.

So early this year, around may I purchased an IRN from a so called "breeder". I actually feel like I saved this bird from them, but that's neither here nor there

I'm working very hard to tame him/her. I gather this baby is about 9 months and very shy and afraid. In the beginning I'll would let ithe roam around the living room to explore and exercise but it just hid under the couch. Thankfully recently he's become fond of running around and actually exploring he seems to be a bit of a loner, which I think is because when I got him, he was sharing a cage with a cockatoo! Hence why I think he's so timid.

I know these babies are very hard to tame but I'm hoping for any kind of help/feedback! I've done lots of reading and watching of YouTube videos but am not impressed. While reading through this forum and lot of you guys seem really knowledgeable. .....so please help!! I want a happy, loving baby

Hi Natolee! If you haven't already, I recommend making a new, separate thread. That way it's easier for individuals to recognize that you are looking for a solution. Otherwise it just gets lost as a reply for a separate person.

We have a lot of great threads on taming birds in general, though I personally think taming an IRN is more of a challenge. It takes a slow, steady approach and lots of positive reinforcement. Look into some posts by MonicaMC on hand taming as well. Barbara Heidenreich has lots of awesome advice as well, and has several YouTube videos and information on her blog.
