I've refused a lot of surrenders lately. A Ringneck, a couple of conures, some cockatiels, and as always, a truck load of budgies. I just can't take in everyone else's problems, especially with my sister and her flock living with me until June.

Well yesterday a friend at a local pet store messaged me that someone wanted to surrender a Ringneck to them. The surrenders didn't even know what kind of bird they had. They described him as "bigger than a cockatiel, smaller than a parrot." He was on a 100% sunflower diet, and hadn't even ever been given a name in the 3+ years the original owner (apparently a relative of the people giving him up) had him. My heart broke and I caved. I told her up front that there is almost no chance I'll keep him, but it sounded like the owners were at the point of ditching him in whatever way they could, maybe even releasing him.

So he is home and in quarantine now. I usually get blood tests in the mail immediately but he was so stressed I think he needs to chill for a while. He isn't tame but I'm almost positive he was hand raised.

So who wants to name the latest foster? Below is the pic they sent ahead of time.

Lucky...as in lucky to have you.

My daughter's first year lamb for 4H was named Lucky. We brought home this cute little lamb (55 pounds), opened the crate and it came flying out. Of course the driveway gate was open. Of course it was dusk and of course it found it's way down the drive, through the gate and off in a flash. We were beside ourselves. We live out in the country so we had to get on the 4 wheeler. We checked all the neighbors. We finally found him. He had gotten in with some cows and their calves. The cows were trying to beat him away from their babies. Our neighbor was able to catch him because he was a little stunned and put him in a stall. Thank goodness he was fine. He got his name then...Lucky to be alive.

I know that feeling, SilverSage. I've been offered so many birds just in the past year, it's insane. But I just can't take everybody. I'm truly at my limit now.

As for a name, hmmmmm....He seems like an Oliver to me.

What a beautiful boy! How could anyone not want him or even name him? And look at the sunflower seed shells, he literally didn't even have a seed mix, just bags of sunflower seeds? My god I hope they weren't salted sunflower seeds...He does look to be in good feather, I hope he comes around, the poor guy probably has no idea what it's like to be loved...They didn't even know what kind of bird he was for 3 years? Why do people get birds to begin with?

Thanks so much for taking him in, if I was anywhere near you I would have taken him in a heartbeat, the poor little guy...You're very much appreciated for helping this sweetheart and doing all that you do. I've refused so many budgies lately I feel awful, I have added a few rescue budgies, after they quarantined and their blood work and fecal smears came back negative, to my indoor aviary where my breeder budgies are. But I can't overcrowd it and I don't want to stress my birds out any more. None of the budgies I've taken in have been at all tame, it's like they've never seen a person before. I had a cockatiel like that as well. But this IRN is just gorgeous and looks to be a just a lovebug if given the chance...

Update!!

The friends at the pet store just called; apparently a woman just called them, very upset, saying that the bird belonged to her dying father and was supposed to go to her, on the mainland. I'm trying to get in touch with her now. Obviously we will have a polite chat about diet as well but now that things are coming to light IS sounds like they are not quite as we were told.

Just got off the phone! "Pretty Bird" will be on his way to Minnesota this week to live with a woman who knows him and knows parrots! She was devastated when she found out he had been surrendered and this is truly a happy ending to this situation!!!

Apparently his name is Pretty Bird, and he seems to recognize it. I'm hoping to have him sent to his new home by the end of this week :)

I'm glad this looks like it is going to work out for both you and the bird. I'm also glad this woman not only knows this specific bird, but also birds in general...I hope to God that means he'll be off the sunflower seed only diet immediately. I've actually never seen that before in all of my bird rescue work or my breeding/selling work, someone only buying big bags of sunflower seeds and throwing them in their bird's cage and feeding them NOTHING ELSE! I was really kind of shocked by that, I don't know why it would surprise me so much, it's amazing what people do to their animals (and kids for that matter), but it definitely did shock me. Like I said, I really hope the sunflower seeds he was fed were not always "salted", as that may cause some serious long-term health problems..
Poor little guy, he's so beautiful, I'm glad he's going home to be with someone he knows and that will take better care of him than he's probably known in his entire life (well, until you got him, lol). He deserves it!

It looks like when the man's health started to fail his relatives took over care for the bird. Some of the local pet stores package single seeds so you can mix your own, and a lot if them will happily sell you the completely wrong thing. Sunflower is the cheapest.

The woman who is getting g him gave me a rundown of her bird's diet and it is an excellent mix of fresh food and pellets that should be excellent for Pretty Bird :)
