This is the only bird forum I've ever written in so I thought I'd post this here. It's not IRN related but really didn't know where to put it. Typically I talk about my IRN Soleil, but today is about my other bird.
Today I had to rush my disabled parakeet to the vet. Friday evening I noticed he had a lump. The emergency vet doesn't handle birds. I knew I had to take him to the vet asap. Sat he bit into that lump. It trickled a small amount of blood but it dried up quickly. I kept it clean. He stopped flying, laying in the bottom of his cage. I kept food in a flat dish, and he ate. Sunday, lump is quarter sized. In a parakeet, that's huge. No puss, lump hard. Today, Monday, my regular vet is not in. Have to locate a bird vet. 3 calls later I rush him to a bird vet 20 mins away. Longest drive of my life. I remember hearing infected fatty tumor, surgery, survival rate slim, if survives poor quality of life. I made the decision to have him euthanized. I spent 20 more mins holding him. They told me to let them know when I was ready. I knew the longer I waited, the harder it would be. I handed Loki to the vet, picked up his travel cage and walked out empty handed. Driving home with the empty cage beside me has been one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. I've dealt with the loss of pets before but have never had to make the decision to have one laid to rest. It's an entirely different pain. Loki's gf Freya is quiet. Soleil my IRN knows something is wrong and is very attentive to me. I've cried for the past 2 hours and I'm spent. My heart hurts. 😢 Fly high Loki. No more pain.

Poor little guy. Some if not all have had to make a quality of life decision with a pet, so, many here know your pain.

I'm so very sorry for your loss of Loki. Such an awful decision you had to make. You sound like a very caring owner and it's obvious your little guy was deeply loved, try to feel good about that. I'm glad you were with him and had the chance to tell him goodby. My thoughts are with you, Freya and Soleil.

Fly free, Little One

You saw him out righgt.
He passed loved and treasured, and that is a great treasure. I'm sure he felt it.
I only hope I can do the same for the Rb.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
My deepest condolences for your loss of Loki. I empathize with your pain, as you made a conscious but compassionate decision to spare him a problematic surgery and recovery.

Hold Freya a bit closer, she may not understand but will help you grieve.

Freya is doing alright. She was very chirpy today. My friend suggested getting Freya a Loki lookalike. I don't think I can handle that emotionally. I'm hoping Freya will be alright as a single but I will keep a close eye on her.
