First of all I am very sorry if I post this in the wrong forum but I have recently got my hands onto a new bird because an old family friend’s birds had babies. He tried selling the birds to people and no one wanted them so I took one, these babies were not hand fed and were in a large aviary, I did think these guys might have been Indian Ringnecks but I think they might be African Ringnecks now.

Our family friend has discussed selling these babies to Magnolia Bird Farm in Cerritos California, but he is also deciding on keeping them because his aviary is really big and can house those birds. This man has had birds for 40 years and yes these babies even though were not hand fed are all healthy according to a vet and they do have perches and toys in the aviary. Our family friend had given me one of the babies for $50, he did say i did not need to pay but I decided to anyways because I know he needed the money.

So does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this new baby bird? He is about 5-6 months, has his wings clipped, and very very skittish. How should I go about taming him? I’ve tamed babies before but my conures and cockatiel were all hand fed. I still have not decided a name for this baby boy either but he is a very pretty bird

I have one picture. I will post it in an album on my profile because I am on my phone right now and don’t know how to post pictures through quick reply yet.

Hello, I was just wondering why you thought he was an ARN? IRNs and ARNs can be harder to tame and have a reputation for becoming wild again quite quickly if interaction drops for even a short period. I have read that IRN's can respond quite badly to being clipped and no doubt the actual process was traumatic for this little one and I guess may have been one of only a few times he's been held by human hands?

I would start very very gently and quietly with your little one. Approach the cage as close as you can just before or as he starts to tense up stop there, talk to him quietly, let him relax and then slowly slowly move closer. The next step would be to get him to take food from your fingers. You'll probably have to start by dropping it in his food bowl and then leaving him, but in time he should be happy to eat with you watching, then take food from your fingers above the food bowl and finally climb around his cage to get to you.

So just re-reading your post your question is how to handle him and my answer is don't. Not until you have done all the groundwork!

IRNs have a reputation for not being cuddly, but there are plenty of owners who prove this is completely untrue!

Thank you for the advice. I haven’t tried to handle him at all. I think he is very scared and traumatized, I love this bird he is really beautiful and has a lot of personality as it is but I just want him to be happy. I’ve noticed that in the last three days he has gotten a lot better. I wanted to take him home not clipped but after the vet visit they would not let me leave without him clipped. I think he is an ARN because my family friend had two clutches of these birds and all of them were pure green, even the parents were pure green and the beak is not a red like an IRN, it is instead a kind of red/brown color.

I talk to him in the morning but he gets really scared when I change his food. Although he is always watching me when i am in the room. For the past three days I will sit in the room and talk to him, a far distance for now but I have been getting just a little closer today and he seems okay with the closer distance today. My family friend has tried handling the babies but he has work everyday and just didnt have time to handle them. Normally if I knew that our friend had two clutches and needed help then i would have rushed over there to help him but I wasn’t notified and I didn’t know at all that he had two clutches till him and I last spoke which was 3 days ago when I took Martini home.
