Hi there! it's my first time using a forum so forgive me am not sure how this works but here I go,
I have 2 indian ringnecks (male and female) they're about 2 years old and I have managed to sort of hand tame the female, she doesn't bite (anymore at least), she steps up (not all the time without fail it's more like when it's convenient for her but she does it 7 out of 10 times) she doesn't really let me pet her or anything either and she doesn't really step up on my finger just my wrist/lower arm area she does take treats from my hand or eat from my hand no prob both of them do actually and I sit her on top of my laptop and she's just there completely chill and even prinning

but my problem is the male ("bondie")
I've had these birds for 8 months despite what I said the female ("capri") and I actually get along pretty well I just feel like she doesn't REALLY trust me, the male however has been trough the exact taming and process
he doesn't freak out when am near his cage, he takes food from my hand no prob BUT HE'LL BITE HARD AS HELL FOR THE HECK OF IT at first I thought it was just the bluffing stage but I already went trough it with capri and she still responds to the training
I can literally be just chilling on my bed away from him and he'll come all the way to where I am just to bite me, he bites my fingers right before taking the treats and every day reaching into the cage to change his food and water is an absolute hell race against time am starting to lose hope with him

I've dealt with cockatiels, conures and amazons in the past and I'v never been bitten this maliciously (which is not a word I like to use because I know there has to be a reason for his biting)

in conclusion my questions are:
1) I feel like capri just uses me as treat dispenser if she doesn't get a treat after stepping up she'll step down right away so it's obvious she doesn't really enjoy being with me, HOW DO I FIX THAT?

2)why is my bondie so aggressive and why have I made no progress with him despite having been able to KINDA tame my female?

this was so long forgive me, I don't even know if I expressed my relationships with them properly here either :(

Sounds like you have come as far as most people come with a female ringneck that isn’t tame to start with. Ringnecks are extremely independent and as a breeder I never allow any that aren’t already extremely loving to go to pet homes because this is a normal outcome. Just continue to dispense treats and toys. Find out what she likes and be the source of all those things. Figure out what she doesn’t like (such as trying to pet her) and STOP doing all those things. You really haven’t had them long; be patient.

As for the boy, I’ve seen a lot of that behavior in male irns that were hand raised but allowed to go wild. I have THREE that will do that and to the best of my ability to tell what’s going on, mine seem to think it is a hilarious game. Mine are in an aviary so I can kind of avoid it but I haven’t seen or heard about this in pet irns in the exact way you describe. Does anything seem to trigger it? Has he always been this way? Was he like this with his previous owners?

Hi, i am no expert and i am having a similar issue. mine is younger tho and i hand raised it so i think it could be bluffing still. he likes scratches on his head and back and he goes into a kind of trance and clucks etc. it seems to make him more agressive after. why? should we stop doing this?
