How to discourage biting?

I'm more looking for preventative advice rather than help with stopping a current problem.

I have a young Ringneck, roughly 5-6 months old, and I got him not long after he was weaned. He is, for the most part, a very sweet bird and doesn't bite often and has only bitten hard once, and still not hard enough to draw blood. I'm a new bird owner and still learning what sets him off, but sometimes he takes issue with me putting my hands near him. Sometimes when I put down one of his bowls, he will lunge at me. Other times he just kind of walks up, takes a perch and basically ignores me in favour of whatever is in the bowl. I'm honestly not sure what I do differently.

And while he doesn't really like my hands near him most of the time (unless i have a toy or food) he has no issue perching on my hand to take a nap when the mood takes him. He doesn't seem to be afraid of me, but maybe I'm invading his space at the wrong times?

Does anyone have any advice on how to discourage lunging and biting without losing his trust? At the moment if he bites me I put him back into his cage for a short time out(Roughly 3-5 minutes) and then let him out again. He is far from vicious, but obviously I don't want this kind of behaviour to develop further. Any advice is welcome, thanks!

Re: How to discourage biting?

silver sage who breeds them said they are unusually fearful of hands, and recommended keeping your fingers tucked..
I will link her web page and you can go through the articles she has there.
