Hi everyone, I have previously posted about these issues with my lorikeet Margarita. A few months down the track and I have worked a few more things out.

So I have come to work out that (I think) he sees me as his mate. When strangers or my other birds come near me his eyes start to pin and he BITES ME.. hard. This is so unlike his usual self. A new thing that he has been doing is getting hold of whatever nearest body part of mine he is nearest to and will attemp to get on top and... in no polite terms.. hump me lol.

Does he see me as his mate? I have tried cutting back his daylight hours to reduce his hormones but it hasn't helped. Will he ever calm down? Getting him a mate is not an option due to noise issues.

How old is he now??? I had that problem with Malachai as well so I asked a Lory breeder from Australia what to do, he told me to discourage them always, if you don't it will lead to further issues. If Malachai wouldn't quit when I discourage him, he gets put up cause he is very persistent. He's a lot better now days but he have his bad days every so often where he would fly out of his cage and go for the full on attack. He's been good for awhile now so I hope he doesn't start that again.

He was born end of 2012. So he is over a year old now. Is there a better way of discouraging him, other than pulling away from him?

Does/did your lorikeet have the humping issue too?

I unbalance him when he tries. I shoosh him away whenever he tries to hump my hand.

And yes he had a huge humping issue and he started young......

Here is a short video clip of him and what he does to me... I usually pull away when he first starts mounting my hand, but sometimes he is too quick and actually does get hold of me :30:

I guess there is no real solution, other than pulling away. I wonder if this is a forever thing then... shame I can't get him a girlfriend.

It didn't last forever with Malachai! He quit after so many tries when I rejected him numerous times.

Can you teach him new behaviors to do on cue? Done right, whenever he starts to act hormonal, you can cue a behavior that is incompatible with him trying to mate with you. This can discourage the behavior by "preventing" it from happening.

You can also try changing behavior by changing his cage, his cage location, the hours of day/night (cut further back on daylight? or try increasing daylight hours? - maybe try using better lighting? a dimly lit room may also help to increase hormones), give him opportunities to forage for food, etc.
