Are they ever still?

Hi there,

I recently purchased a six month old female Rainbow lorikeet. She is very sweet, but when she comes out of her cage she is never still. I can't hold her on my hand, or get her to stand on a playstand and play. It's very exhausting. Will she always be this way, or can she be tamed down some? I love how playful she is but also find it a bit exhausting having her out of the cage. Any advice is welcome.

Do you have any play areas for her to enjoy while being outside of her cage? My IRN is a hyperactive birdie, so I have two play areas for him to enjoy, and I'm currently working on hanging play gyms and home made orbitals. If you have other areas that have new toys, fun things to climb or entertain, or foraging opportunities, it will make it far easier to manage having her out because her entire focus won't be on you.

I've also found that when I want to sit back and relax with Shiko out, I have to have toys out for him near me to help. Otherwise he goes after whatever I have. I lay out foot toys, small foraging toys, sprinkle seeds and his favourite pellets along the sheet I lay down on the couch or on the bed, and it gives me time. In fact I've managed to read 4 novels in the past two weeks while having him out with me!

Also, if your bird is flighted, I also recommending flight recalling to exhaust her. An exercised bird is a happy, quiet bird. Same goes for dogs :)

Their very hyper as babies :) They get better after a few years old [ but still a busy bird].

None at the moment -- I volunteer at a bird rescue, where I've made various avian friends
Some lories are always pretty active, but yours should calm down eventually. You'll also find that they're quite messy!
