My new rainbow lorikeet

I have for some time missed small birds in my house. I have a long history with rosellas, but have also looked at IRN's.

It seems the decision was taken for me, as I was at a bird show and in a tiny cage, this lovely lorikeet caught my eye:

I was told "she" was "a little tame" as "she" would take fruit from your hand. I found out that "she" is a lot more tame than that, as she snuggled in towards me and closed "her" eyes, when I petted her:

Now I will spend the next days reading everything I can about lorikeets.

I have bought mango, pineapple, melon and blueberries along with LoriDry and LoriNectar. Is there anything you will reccomend me to get or do?

I can't help to answer your question, but I had never seen a lorikeet prior to this, and I have to say I'm absolutely in love. "She" is stunning.

I am SOO in love with my new tiny bird! I can't believe my luck to find a bird this tame at a bird show for aviary birds and for half the price of a tame usually costs (not that the money does any difference, but nice anyway)

That is a strikingly beautiful bird! I have only seen them in zoo settings; the "Lorikeet Landing" at San Diego Zoo Safari Park. (sister facility to the San Diego Zoo) Definitely special dietary needs, IIRC it predominantly a liquid nectar. They sell little cups of fluid that cause several to flock to your arms and shoulders!!

I know a breeder of these birds and fortunately, she guided me to "essentials" for Monet. As she has 16 of them along with approx 200 other birds, she doesn't do training with her birds. I do a lot of training with my birds, so I am a bit at my wits end in what to train with.

I have figured that Monet likes mango, but she's so slow at eating it, it makes a poor training treat. I have used the liquid nectar mixed with mushed banana, but as you can see in the below video, it also takes quite long to give her a treat. I have tried just to give her less, but it seems, she can tell how much is on the spoon and she is so clever, that she takes a look at it and determines it's not worth her while

Lorikeets are one species that, for me, are not ideal home companions. The specialized dietary needs and indeed their poops are just too taxing for a normal human being like myself. Beautiful birds no doubt, and we see here that they are quite capable of bonding and learning, same as any parrot. Got to give kudos to you for adopting this beauty. PLease keep the board informed of her progress and yours!

As for the name, I thought about Van Gogh, but figured she wasn't yellow enough. I have desided, that if she turns out to be male (am waiting for DNA results), I will rename her Manet and the female I then get, will be called Monet

That's also the reason I am keeping her in the bathroom. That is also a place where she is safe from my macaws beaks

The plan is to get a mate and they will then move into an outdoor aviary I am building. I had planned to take in a male and a female (from 2 different owners) black headed caiques in need of rehoming, but now it seems their planned aviary is going to be a lorikeet aviary. I do have another aviary in the appropriate size, but was planning to have that as "day outing" aviary for the macaws until their large aviary was done.

I'd say fill the spoon but only give her a taste after she correctly follows your instructions, then it's more of a treat and not a feeding?

Thanks for the advice. I would usually give treats instead of feedings.

She is still quite new to the concept of "working" for food, so I will continue feeding her and getting her to work for it.

Once we get more acquainted, I will start giving treats instead of feedings

Try to stick to fruit that is low iron and avoid veggies if possible. Most people make the mistake of feeding veggies but in the wild they eat a diet comprised primarily of fruits due to their low iron content. I give mine blueberries as well as bananas, mango, pineapple and pears and apples and i puree it occasionally but most of the time they like it peeled and eat it that way. Good luck with your bird!!!

p.s. I have an acrylic front cage to handle the poop and I use cardboard around the outside to keep things tidy and I use recycled paper litter for their poop. You always want to make sure the poop is a liquid consistency because their diet is comprised almost entirely of nectar and fruit. If it seems dry or lumpy then their may be an issue.

I haven't given her any veggies as I am already struggling to get Monet to eat fruit. I have been recommended to mix in mashed banana with her nectar, when we train.

I have tried to give her pieces of fruit, but she won't touch it. She will eat it from my hand, but if left in the cage, she won't touch it. To puree her fruit sounds like a good idea and I will try to do that. Would you recommend to puree the fruits together or to puree one type of fruit at a time?

Since I haven't had much luck in getting her to eat fruit yet, I have thought about giving her fruit juice. Is that a bad idea?

And the DNA result has come in and Monet IS a SHE :40: :smile015:
