My baby flew away [emoji17][emoji22]

Hi ladies and gents!
I am new to this! My gorgeous gorgeous violet masked lovebird Heli flew away on Friday the 21/10/2016 (today is the 4th day missing). I am absolutely DEVASTATED and grief stricken. I hand raised him from 4wks old :( I guess I'm just needing some support and advice from someone who has lost a birdie [emoji20] i have done everything in my power to try and find him and blanketed the area in flyers. I honestly never knew how attached I was to him until he flew away [emoji24] I know the chances of him coming home are very slim as he had never been out in the wild and was so attached to me. I feel like I've completely let him down and have been crying for him everyday. Am I wrong to be already thinking about getting another? He was my first bird I've ever owned and I was obsessed with him. He was just gorgeous and friendly and loveable. I obviously am not going to get another until I pull myself together but would it help with the greivibv process? PLEASE HELP. I'm so distraught.

My sweet sweet baby lovebird flew away. I can't sleep. Can't eat. Can't work. I never knew such a tiny tiny parrot could have such a HUGE impact on my life. My first ever bird. Hand raised and feed from 4wks old (rescued from nest) never knew how much blood sweat and tears went into hand raising. And now my sweet gorgeous boy is gone. He flew from his cage on Friday 21/10/2016 and it was my birthday yesterday. Worse birthday ever. I'm absolutely devastated. Has this happened to anyone? I really need support. I feel like I've completely let him down. He would've been so so scared. I'm still holding onto hope he will be found but I know the chances are very slim. I have done everything I can. Please come home HELI bellz

Hi, where are you located? What steps have you taken so far! The blind panic is horrible! Many of us have been there!

I Live in Brisbane Australia :) I should have actually introduced myself. I have literally done everything possible. Flyers near and far. Contacted and reported to every Facebook site, parrot alert, council, local LOST and found and even reported all over Australia, you name it I've done it. Got up dusk and dawn and throughout the day. I think I just have to except he is gone [emoji30]

What I found really weird is not many people know about lovebird behaviour and surviving in the wild (until you actually google it) but I wanted to hear from someone who's done it and felt as Devo as me. I literally feel like I'm being such a drama queen but he was my life.

I really feel for you :(

My cockatiel Dusty was my first bird ever. Bought him when he was a few weeks old and the bird shop finished the weaning before he was allowed to come home. I only had him for about 3 months before the sad day that he got out but what a terrible terrible feeling regardless. He was such a sweet and cheerful little birdy. Of course I posted lost bird listings online, put up fliers around the neighborhood, and went looking and calling around the neighborhood for several days but I never saw my Dusty again.

Hoping that you have the very best of luck and that your sweetie is returned to you very very soon. :blue2:

Hi Jess, sorry that your introduction to us is under such poor conditions. Iv've been where you are, many of us have. Some, some have had birds returned to them. My wife has a cousin whose parrot flew away, only to have the little guy hang around the neighborhood and eventually returned. And there are other cases too. So dont give up so easily. Have you put his cage outside with his food bowl on top ? Not knowing your living conditions , its harder to make suggestions that may work. Are you in a city, in an apartment? Or more rural, in your own house , etc etc. Please let us know, members here can really help.

And dont give up trying to find your baby. Not for awhile at least.

Hello, and welcome to the Parrot Forums family. I wish it could be under better circumstances, though. I'm so sorry this has happened. But please do not give up hope that you might still find your sweet lovebird. There are quite a few members on this forum who have tragically lost their birds, true. But there are also several instances where people have found their birds weeks or even months later.

One notable example is my friend Trish (Betrisher), also from Australia, btw, who'd lost her beloved alexandrine, Barney, on November 28, 2014. She did everything she could, but as days became weeks she started to lose hope. But then, when she least expected it, someone called saying she'd found an alex that fit her description and wanted her to come and identify him! She was reunited with Barney on December 18th!

Here is the thread where Barney had gone missing: http://www.parrotforums.com/lost-found/49709-heartbroken.html
And here is the one where he was found: http://www.parrotforums.com/alexandrines/50169-guess-what.html

And there have been at least 4 other such examples that I can recall.

I'm not trying to fill you with false hope or anything, but rather I want you to know that it's still very possible that you might yet be reunited with your bird. And whether you do ultimately find him or not, this community will be here for you.

I've taken the liberty of moving this thread from the Bereavement sub-forum to the Lost and Found sub-forum. Both because I'm definitely not ready to give up on your little guy just yet, and because we have many members in Australia who might see your post in the Lost and Found section and keep an eye out for him.

Signs, reward, using a recording of a lovebirds natural call, and prayer. I have had all these things work for my Jenday, the escape artist, who got out and we recovered him 5 separate times. Put the signs up in a 2 miles radius.

I have no additions to the great advice, but I'll chime in on the welcome and also, of course, the sympathy and support.
We're here for you... please feel free to write as much as you want/need.
I can only imagine the horror of losing a bird.
Don't forget to take care of yourself... rest (as much as possible)... eat or at least drink to stay hydrated... do any spiritual activities that soothe you.
I know we're all sending our sincerest, strongest energy for your darling's return.

I'm so sorry - I know you are going through a difficult time, but don't give up yet. Also be sure to take flyers to any veterinarian's offices in the area, and look up numbers for animal control, animal shelters, and bird rescue organizations. They can all pass the word on. People will sometimes call saying I found this bird, what should I do, or I found this bird I want to bring him in for a checkup. If you have any classified online places you can post - like Craigslist here in the States - be sure to post a lost ad, and to check found ones as well as birds for sale. Don't give up ...

So sorry to read this. Are you close to an animal shelter in your neighbourhood? Of course, I'm far away in Canada, but work in an SPCA. We get birds dropped off that were found as strays, from budgies, cockatiels, conures, even the odd Amazon or Quaker. Not many people seem to think that their parrot made it alive and are not calling around which is too bad. This is how I was able to adopt my last High Red on Pineapple conure; the person who had it before me did a good job training it, then it must have flown out the door and he/she never called the SPCA - sad! BUT, my luck of course.
