A friend of mine found an amazon in El Cajon today. She texted me for help caring for her and finding her humans. Though we do have wild flocks, this bird is clearly somebody's pet, as she is eating out of our hands and tentatively stepping up. If you know anybody who's lost an amazon, please contact me with the specific species of amazon, along with any identifying marks the bird may have. I'm guessing "she", but we all know the bird could be either male or female just as easily.

Please have your friends stop by their nearest Vets Office and have them check for a Micro Chip! Near all Vets do not charge for checking a found Parrot!

As stated above: Wow!

So I'm a bit on the sensitive side today. I really am overwhelmed, and my natural inclination to think I'm always the one at fault and I've always done something wrong probably has me misinterpreting the "wow...". But here's the conversation:

The bird isn't actually injured. He/she was just scared and weak. I helped get her settled in a portable cage, with decent food (a selection of different pellets I have on hand, plus some AviCakes in case the bird was picky) and water. Once she gulped down some water and ate some food, she perked up a lot. I was prepared to take her to my vet tonight if I thought she needed it, but she seems quite fine now. I think the plan is to go to the vet to scan for a chip tomorrow, and I am helping post found bird ads along with searching through lost bird ads.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
What a great save, Maggie! Despite deep sadness you've come to the aid of this wayward Amazon. Hope you are able to assist reuniting with a concerned and loving family.

This is exactly what my “wow” meant! It was late and I was out of words for the night!!
Your losses are staggering! And to have this little one find you in his time of need is, well, WOW!
Bless you!

Thank you. I almost can't help it. And I knew I had to be misinterpreting things. Text over the internet is so hard to read sometimes. And I really am super sensitive right now.

And we're going to try our damnedest to find her humans. Looking at her in the daylight, I think he/she's a Mexican redhead and not the LCA I'd initially thought. I'm going to call my vet when they open at 9 to ask when a good time to swing by to have her scanned for a chip and get their confirmation of her exact species so I can be more certain with lost/found ads.

Unfortunately she doesn't have a chip. :( I had one serious response to my found bird ads so far, and a number of scammers. The serious response we determined was a different bird. I was hoping for a quick reuinion, so here's hoping I get a better response.

She looks like a Red Lored Amazon to me. but I can't tell for sure from the picture.
I miss my little Pacho sooo much.
She crossed over the rainbow bridge just last September.

If you don't have any luck finding the Original owner and you can't keep her...I would be happy to give her a forever home with me.

I remember when you lost Pacho. So sad. It's heartbreaking every time. She's definitely a Mexican Redhead. I took her to my CAV just to scan for a chip (Dr. Jenkins in San Diego, so definitely an expert), and he confirmed she's a MRHA. If I can't find her humans right away, I want to take her in for a full exam and bloodwork for the major communicable diseases next week. MrC is really fond of her, so he may want to keep her, even though I'm not ready for another bird so soon after Charlotte. But I'll PM you later today.

Love Dr. Jenkins! Great vet!
Hope you find her owners. Have you checked Pet Alert? Put up any 'found' posters at our local rescues?

I wouldn't trust my flock to any other vet. He's amazing. I'm working on posters for physical locations, but I've put ads up at 911 Parrot Alert along with a few other places. Getting a lot of scammers, but I expected that.
