So based on the thread that was closed yesterday featuring a Youtube video of someone who found a baby cockatiel in Salinas, CA and just decided to keep him without looking for it's owners, 2 things happened that were positive:

#1) The person on YouTube was reported to the local authorities and the cockatiel he found and decided to keep is being advertised on the local Craigslist, Facebook, and Parrot911 sites, and is hopefully being taken to a local rescue and away from this person...

#2) I found a post for a lost cockatiel on the local Modesto/Salinas, CA Craigslist page and we were all hoping it was the bird found in the YouTube video, but it was not. However, I have spoken to the owner and promised him that I would link his own Craigslist ad here so that we can advertise and hopefully help find his lost cockatiel, as his 12 year old daughter is crushed.

Here is the link to his Craigslist Ad:
https://monterey.craigslist.org/pet/d/lost-cockatiel/6588036889.html

****He and his wife bought this 9 week old, hand-raised cockatiel from a breeder for their daughter's 12th birthday only a week prior to him accidentally being lost on May 9th. They and their young daughter put a deposit on the baby, waited 3 months to pick him up, and then drove 7 hours to and from the breeder to get the 9 week old baby cockatiel. They had him a week, his daughter fell in love with him of course, and then they didn't realize that the bird could still fly-off with it's wings clipped, and they lost the baby.

This bird is a very tame, friendly, now 10 week-old cockatiel with clipped wings, so he can't fly too far in a clip, so hopefully he hasn't gone far from their home in Seaside, CA (outside of Modesto and Salinas). If anyone finds a young cockatiel in this area, or they see an ad for a found cockatiel in this area, please either contact the owner in the Craigslist ad, or you can just contact me and I have his personal information.

The family thanks us all very much for caring enough to reach out to him about the bird in the YouTube video, as that bird does look very much like their bird does. Also, he said they had already given up hope of finding him because they just assumed that someone would keep him, but now that we all made the effort we did, that we have given them hope again that there are good people in the world, and they are now advertising all over the place to find their bird. So thanks to everyone who participated in that post yesterday, it was not at all silly or a waste of time, as we helped other human beings and hopefully a couple of baby cockatiels!

The bird in the ad on Craigslist is not a picture of the bird the family lost... if you do a google search on the image, several websites pop up where that image has been used.

Not only that, but the image is a picture of an adult bird... not a chick. Normal grey chicks will have grey faces, not yellow, even at 10 weeks in age.

And the cockatiel that was found is an adult of at least 6+ months in age, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was actually 6+ years old. The cockatiel from the video clip...

We determined that the cockatiel in the video was not this family's pet, the family viewed the video and went over and over it, and determined that it was not their pet. I mentioned this above in the original post.

The reason they used a stock photo of a cockatiel is that they only had their baby for a week, and they had taken no photos of him yet. So they found a photo that looked the closest to their bird and put it on the ad.

Please, this family has spoken to me several times now, they have now posted on Parrot911, etc., and their daughter is very distraught about losing her new baby cockatiel. Please don't accuse them of lying or making this up, as I promised them that I would post an ad in our forum for them....

Ellen, I do not believe that you are lying or making it up... simply pointing out that the bird found is not the bird lost. :( If it was, that would be great!

I hope the family that lost their cockatiel finds him/her and the cockatiel that was found is returned!

So glad someone got the authorities involved, so unfortunate that there are 2 families missing their lovely birds. I wish I could help somehow x.x

I didn't think you were saying that I was lying, lol, I thought you were trying to imply that this family was lying about losing their bird because the photo is a stock photo. He outwardly told me that they hadn't even had time to take photos before losing the baby...so sad, I feel for their 12 year old daughter, apparently her birthday was actually months ago, and that's when they put the deposit down with the breeder. Then the girl waited for 3 months to get the baby...so awful...

So glad the authorities got involved. Did you report the guy who made the YouTube video, or did you hear from someone else?

That’s great! Thanks so much! I wouldn’t have been able to do that (since I’m not in the US) so I’m really glad that I posted it to the forums and someone took action.

Yeah, this guy really pissed me off, especially once he made the comment back underneath his video that "He'd just be glad that someone found his bird", so he had no intention of trying to find the owners at all, nor did he care about the fact that someone was missing their beloved pet. I posted a link to the above lost-cockatiel ad in the comments to his video, and made the statement that "See, this is a baby cockatiel that was lost 5 miles from your house, 3 days after you found this bird. So even though it's not the same bird, you should be able to see how easily and often this happens, and how desperately the owners are looking for their bird and missing their bird very much. So this is why you need to post that you found this bird on your local Craigslist, and then call all of your local vets, pet shops, and rescues within at least a 30 mile radius, and tell them that you have found a young cockatiel, give them your location and personal contact information, and that way when the rightful owner of this cockatiel calls one of these places trying to find their pet, or they come around asking to put up flyers advertising that they lost their pet, these vets, shop owners, and rescue people can inform them that they know of someone that may have their bird, and they can call you. At least make this attempt for a month, and if you don't find the owner then at least you tried. But please don't just pronounce this bird as your own and rename it without even trying. As you can see, it could be a little 12 year old girl who lost her little bird that she loves very much"...

Yeah, the comment I got back was calling me a b***h and telling me to get off of his YouTube page...lovely human being this guy is...

Wow, that guy is a special kind of idiot, isn't he...Of all the back yards in the greater Modesto/Salinas area that poor cockatiel could have flown into...

Oh, no HE didn't call me it just one of his fans. I have heard nothing from him concerning what he has done. I haven't seen him mention the bird anywhere after that video
