Mango the Indian Ringneck and Peach the Cockatiel; Kiwi found a new home
We all went outside for a walk and when we came home, as soon as the door opened, out he went. So fast I did not even see him. We could hear him in the backyard trees for about 20 minutes, then he was silent.

There are a lot of wild birds here, finches, robins, and blackbirds and I think he flew off with some familiar sounding birds. We were up on the roof with his cage, cover, and play perches, ringing his favorite bell and calling. It is dark now and we left that all up there.

This is west bay area CA, so are there odds he could survive or even find his way home? I was going to go back up in a bit and first thing in the morning to try again.

He was about a year and half old. Green, yellow, black/blue accents. Says Hey Kiwi, I'm a budgie, peekaboo, cheeseburger, and was working on some more.

I’m sorry for your loss, accidents like this happen in the blink of an eye don’t they?!

You can place a “lost” ad on www.parrotalert.com, one of our members got her eclectus back that way. Also notify all the vets and pet shops in your area in case someone hands Kiwi in. We once lost an IRN and made up our own flyers and did a letterbox drop in our neighbourhood and had him back the same day!

I hope your little Kiwi finds his way home soon!

Awww man! Terrifying.... I hope so that you can find him. Check and see if any neighbors feed wild birds, as he will fallow them to the feeder. So they can keep a look at for him. You can put out a platform feeder too, matb the wild birds will bei g him back to you at the feeder

Oh no, so sorry!! Can you put his cage with his food outside for him? Maybe he'll get hungry soon. Do you have other birds who he may recognize? You could put their cage outside to entice him back down.

If no one was home why wasn't he caged???

I had his cage and play perch on the roof all night with a dim light illuminating the area. I went up a few times to call him and ring his bell, and then again through the morning as the sun came up and all the birds starting singing.

When the sun was shining and it felt warm enough, I got my ring neck and cockatiel in separate cages out on the front lawn so they could call each other. Many times they will call back and forth with Kiwi. I'll also put out extra food around Kiwi's cage, which I also moved down to the front yard so I can see it. (these are all on stands off the grass)

I could only leave my birds out for about an hour until the next door construction crew finally came back to demolish that house, so heavy equipment and jackhammers are sure to scare little ones away.

This is my daughter's budgie and it was the end of her birthday day, so maybe a little more traumatizing, including that she saw him from outside fly out and disappear into the sky and trees.

OMG, My daughter and I decided to go for a walk, the long block around the back of our home. We heard Kiwi, so we knew he was still alive! We had his bells and were calling his talking words. Then, there he was, about 12 feet up a birch tree. It was surreal how much his colors contrasted against the tree and background sky!

He was calling back and looked like he wanted to fly to us, He'd take a few steps closer and start to bob in. Some neighbors were out and we got a 3-step stool. We were so close, but he flew off. I could hear him over the trees and houses on another block, but then I could not hear him any more.

Two more days where we've moved to our bikes to increase coverage, ringing his bell and calling his words, and not a sight nor a sound.

His cage has been strapped to the top of chimney with tablet playing budgie sounds in afternoon through dusk and into early night.

It has been a perfect storm that I feel needs to end. We have a good climate around here so he may live happily. I'd expect he would start to mimic local birds very soon and have a wonderful life around us, and we may spot him again.

That may very well be the case. Only you know how long is a reasonable period to devote significant energy and stress to finding Kiwi.

Something got into Kiwi's cage and ravaged the place after the door fell down and trapped it. I think it was a squirrel. The bars got mangled where it escaped. Had to take the cage down and cleaned it up.

Daughter has been singing ever since the loss. She sings very well...

My daughter has pondered getting another bird a few times over the past couple of months. She wondered if Kiwi could still be alive. If Kiwi is still alive, I have a suspicion of where he may be.

I have known since summer of a nearby apartment complex who's budgie owner would put their cage outside on the 2nd floor balcony, against the window. I think there was access from inside as the cage was always there. I looked closely for a green parakeet and one was not there.

The cage has been moved away for a while but today I happened to notice the cage inside at an adjacent wall in the window. There are in fact two cages there and many more budgies. They are inside so hard to make any detail. As I moved around the building to get another angle, I noticed another cage full of budgies on a 2nd floor balcony on the other side of the apartment. There were three budgies and one was green. Too far away to see detail and it was nearly dusk, but the color looked more pale.

Anyway, these birds are no more than 2000 feet from our home, as the crow flies, so what are the chances that Kiwi would not find his own kind and make home there? He was always brazen enough with my birds, he would probably run the place by now.

So, now the dilemma ensues...

WHOAAAA.. is this member reachable? was kiwi male or female? what colors? in florida? I might have her!

I think Kiwi was a green parakeet. Blueberry is the one that showed up to your house, right? So she’s blue?

You can shoot them a PM, they may not respond as they’ve been inactive for a while!

They said above in one of their posts that Kiwi is green (“ I looked closely for a green parakeet and one was not there.”). Hope that helps!
