Lost Kiwi - Budgie

We all went outside for a walk and when we came home, as soon as the door opened, out he went. So fast I did not even see him. We could hear him in the backyard trees for about 20 minutes, then he was silent.

There are a lot of wild birds here, finches, robins, and blackbirds and I think he flew off with some familiar sounding birds. We were up on the roof with his cage, cover, and play perches, ringing his favorite bell and calling. It is dark now and we left that all up there.

This is west bay area CA, so are there odds he could survive or even find his way home? I was going to go back up in a bit and first thing in the morning to try again.

He was about a year and half old. Green, yellow, black/blue accents. Says Hey Kiwi, I'm a budgie, peekaboo, cheeseburger, and was working on some more.

Re: Lost Kiwi - Budgie

Check this thread-lots of good advice. And I would absolutely be outside first thing in the morning, right before it starts to get light. Hopefully he’s just decided to roost overnight where he landed and he hasn’t gone far.

Re: Lost Kiwi - Budgie

I’m sorry for your loss, accidents like this happen in the blink of an eye don’t they?!

You can place a “lost” ad on www.parrotalert.com, one of our members got her eclectus back that way. Also notify all the vets and pet shops in your area in case someone hands Kiwi in. We once lost an IRN and made up our own flyers and did a letterbox drop in our neighbourhood and had him back the same day!

I hope your little Kiwi finds his way home soon!

Awww man! Terrifying.... I hope so that you can find him. Check and see if any neighbors feed wild birds, as he will fallow them to the feeder. So they can keep a look at for him. You can put out a platform feeder too, matb the wild birds will bei g him back to you at the feeder

Re: Lost Kiwi - Budgie

Oh no, so sorry!! Can you put his cage with his food outside for him? Maybe he'll get hungry soon. Do you have other birds who he may recognize? You could put their cage outside to entice him back down.

If no one was home why wasn't he caged???

Re: Lost Kiwi - Budgie

I had his cage and play perch on the roof all night with a dim light illuminating the area. I went up a few times to call him and ring his bell, and then again through the morning as the sun came up and all the birds starting singing.

When the sun was shining and it felt warm enough, I got my ring neck and cockatiel in separate cages out on the front lawn so they could call each other. Many times they will call back and forth with Kiwi. I'll also put out extra food around Kiwi's cage, which I also moved down to the front yard so I can see it. (these are all on stands off the grass)

I could only leave my birds out for about an hour until the next door construction crew finally came back to demolish that house, so heavy equipment and jackhammers are sure to scare little ones away.

This is my daughter's budgie and it was the end of her birthday day, so maybe a little more traumatizing, including that she saw him from outside fly out and disappear into the sky and trees.

Re: Lost Kiwi - Budgie

OMG, My daughter and I decided to go for a walk, the long block around the back of our home. We heard Kiwi, so we knew he was still alive! We had his bells and were calling his talking words. Then, there he was, about 12 feet up a birch tree. It was surreal how much his colors contrasted against the tree and background sky!

He was calling back and looked like he wanted to fly to us, He'd take a few steps closer and start to bob in. Some neighbors were out and we got a 3-step stool. We were so close, but he flew off. I could hear him over the trees and houses on another block, but then I could not hear him any more.
