Cockatiels - Oz & Kaila
hello, I just really need to talk about this because it's seriously angering me. Yesterday, one of my friends told me that her father in law found a cockatiel outside (and good thing he did, we're in Canada, in november). This is where the problems begin.

Looking online, we saw that someone had posted a notice that they list their tiel in the same neighborhood, on the same day he found it. Now at this time of year, not many people keep windows open and that neighborhood is mostly appartments, so the odds are extremely high that this lost cockatiel he found belongs to the woman who posted the add. Now this should be a simple story with a happy ending, easy to reunite the bird and her owner.

Well no. This man owns a parakeet, and has now asked my friend to adopt his parakeet because he wants to keep the lost cockatiel. (Can we take a moment to contemplate he wants to get rid of his pet he's bonded with for years to keep someone else's bird...?)

I've been urging my friend to contact the owner of the tiel about this and talk her father in law into giving it back put she's worried about starting an argument. Now I myself don't have the contact info of this man and as this is a close friend, I know that going behind her back and contacting the owner would be pretty awkward (and I wouldn't be able to put owner in contact with the guy, but at least she'd know her bird hasnt frozen to death...) so I've been trying to convince her and I think Ill be able to since she's sympathetic and knows she wouldn't want this happening to her either.

If she refuses to contact the owner I'll try to even if I can't really do anything but I'm just so... mad... I just really needed to share my frustration with people who won't say "eh, it's just a bird, it's not like a dog or cat"...

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
An ethical dilemma!! Seems the man who found the cockatiel and seeks to turf his parakeet for new-found bounty is woefully lacking. If only he knew the heart-rending agony as some persevere, not knowing if their beloved is alive.

I'd endorse you trying to do whatever is reasonably possible to talk sense into the greedy and insensitive man! Good luck, please keep us updated!!

This is beyond frustrating! And maddening doesn't even begin to describe it. I can't imagine this guy's thinking. Definitely needs a good shot in the arm of "how would you feel if it was you losing one of your kids?" Ugh!

In all honesty I’d contact the person who lost her cockatiel. You can remain anonymous and tell the owner the name of who found the her bird and to maybe offer a reward- honestly this one of the reason people offer rewards. I’m sure this man who found the bird has told others about finding the tiel so he won’t necessarily know who contacted the owner. Please keep us update!

As a momma to a lost quaker in Florida, im sick to my soul, and tearful.
I do not understand why people think parrots who bond fiercely with their family are free , and yet would try and reunite a lost dog...
I believe the law is on the side of the owner. Finders must make the efforts to reunite. The owner csn file a police report on her lost bird, this is recommended by parrot 911 alert Obviously this is the lost cockatiels.
The owner would likely buy that stupid sinner a cockatiel, in order to get hers back.
Have the owner plaster the street with lost flyers. Hopefully making sure everyone knows and perr pressure will help him fo what's right

B&G Macaw, Galah, 5 cockatiels, 50 billion and a half budgies. We breed and do rescue. Too many to list each individual's name and age etc, but they are each individuals and loved dearly.
Are there photos of "either" bird(I am also convinced it is the same bird). Hard to deny photographic evidence that the bird he found belongs to another...

Ugh. People like this are the worst! A friend in college was dating a gal like that. I have absolutely NO idea what he saw in her. She was a bad person. Thankfully he is married to another gal now and they have a child together. Back to the story. The ex girlfriend "found" a dog and took it to class with her all day and around campus. She took it home to her (no pets) apartment and "tried" to find the owner. She found the rescue who had placed the dog about a year ago. The rescue basically said they would come get the dog the next day and that the owner would not get the dog back because it had run off so they weren't a good home.

I spent literally five minutes on my phone and found several heartbroken ads looking for the pooch. Turns out the dog had run out and the gal had grabbed the dog outside of its own house within a few minutes of it getting out. I contacted them and told them the whole situation. They were at her apartment within an hour(literally IMMEDIATELY hopped in the car to get the lost dog). The owner himself seemed special needsy and was VERY happy to have his best friend back. I was a very happy camper to fascilitate that reunion. The owner held out 100$ cash and before I could refuse it, THAT WITCH TOOK THE MONEY. She was perfectly happy to steal the dog, almost get it removed from a happy home, was talking about trying to keep it in her no dogs apartment, and then ACCEPTED A FRICKING REWARD!!!! She tried to split it with me after they left and I basically laughed in her face and said there was no way I would have taken if from them and I definitely didn't want it from her.

There was so much about that gal that was just despicable. Hopefully your friend's FIL sees the light, or at least the bird gets returned home where he belongs.

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
That's messed up-- if he would trade his parakeet like that, it's basically like....dumping his current,long-term relationship for a shiny, new upgrade...No thought of the trauma that losing an "owner" (AKA flock) to both creatures!!! SAD :(

I hope you change his mind...heck, just tell the owners of the lost tiel that your friend has the bird-- then maybe he will have a heart and pity their sincerity...especially because I bet their tiel would respond in an obvious way.

Oh boy...this is so sad. I have a buddy who found a young budgie this summer. He was getting in to his car and the little guy landed on his door frame  He tried to catch him but the budgie flew off and crash landed in the grass. Ray was able to scoop him up and took him inside the house. Long story short, his gf's daughter had an old cage,he let the bird settle in,took him to the vet,the CAV said he was less than a year old, bought a new bigger cage etc etc. He called me knowing I have birds asking all sorts of questions. I asked if he tried finding the owner, telling him the budgie was probably an escapee and someone is missing him.Told him he should join the forum,do facebook post or parrot 911 and he hasn't and doesn't plan to. Yes he is taking excellent care of the little thing but still there is probably some young boy or girl with a ripped apart heart out there.

Update on the cockatiel, she tried to convince her father in law to give it back and sent him the link to the missing bird ad. Apparently, it pissed him off and now she and her fiance re fighting about it (cause her fiance had to deal with the guy's anger). She says that they'd already told him someone was looking for the bird yesterday (and she took it further today by sending him the actual ad, hoping to tug at his non existent heartstrings) and the first thing he said was "is there a reward?"... I'm just... wow...

So now I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I don't know if she'll want to escalate it further and cause a strain on her relationship. Obviously I can't just let this go (though people have been telling me I should just mind my own business) but now she's asked me to not contact the owner myself as I'd make the situation worse (because she s the one who told me about it) and that she'll contact her herself but that she was mostly going to do it because she knows me well enough to know I will if she doesn't (so now I feel like I'm putting her in a hard place and I hate that. I don't want her to feel like I'm forcing her to do this, even if it IS the right thing... every day no one wrotes to the owner is a day whereshe worries about the safety of her baby...)

I'm gonna talk to her later and have her tell that horrible person (the father in law) that I'll give him a 40$ ransom... sorry I mean reward...and go get it at his place then contact the owner. If he refuses that, I dunno. Maybe try to find him on facebook or something (I do have his first name) and tell him he can either take the money or sort this all out with the real owner and the cops, but that would probably wreck my friendship and put a strain on their relationship so I'm very open to other suggestions...

Edit: I hate the thought of giving this swine money but if it can spare my friend some stress and help reunite someone with their pet, I'll do it

As a jaded 50 year old, maybe it's better she finds out the character of her fiancee and future father in law now. If a man picked a fight with me over being honorable..........
Its hard for good people to imagine the bad in others .
Perhaps the family could offer to get him a cockatiel for Christmas , but in tge holiday spirit return this baby to his momma....

I hate all of this, for how many lives this evil deed has touched

She knows her father in law's character well, they've been together 5 years. Apparently when they told him they got engaged about a month back he didn't say anything, just started talking about a great deal he got on winter tires. Her fiance said they shouldn't even tell him since he wouldn't care but my friend said he should find out from them and not someone else... from what I understand, he disapproves of her because she's black (her fiance is white). I honestly don't understand how her fiance hasn't cut that toxic man out of his life by now... I get it's his dad, but... yeah...

WOW! I am without words. I can't even imagine this scenario. That "man" is cruel and unfeeling and only cares about himself (just my honest opinion here)
I wish there were more people in this world like you. Try not to beat yourself up too much, you have done much more than a lot of others would do. I know it is disheartening to you.

Please keep us updated! I always check in to see... I know if this was my bird I’d be so upset right now :( thank you for relenting . I like to think the good out weighs the bad. Keep pushing through! I’d honestly just call the cockatiel owner to just let her know what’s going on and her cockatiel is still alive. May help to say the cockatiel has a medical condition- it’s what people say for missing dogs and cats. Sending prayers and well wishes all the way around.
