Finding Minho, our red-bellied parrot

Minho, our young 1 3/4 year-old red-bellied parrot, flew out of our back door as I opened it to let our dog out on Saturday, October 17.

Minho has a bright orange belly with lime green feathers under his tail and grayish feathers on his head and back. He's a little larger than a blue jay.

It appears he is surviving in the wild. The most recent report had him seen in the late morning of Friday, November 27 up in a tree near a blue jay and a cardinal near the intersection of Summer and Arlington streets in West Acton, Massachusetts. This is a little under 3 miles from our house.

We believe he's roosting on or around buildings at night to keep warm and then eating at bird feeders in nearby neighborhoods.

We've been advised to play loudly sounds of a female red-bellied parrot early in the morning to try to attract him. We've found a few recordings and are playing them but are looking for more. If you have a female red-bellied parrot, could you make a recording of her squawking and send the recording to me?

In case you're wondering, we have followed the guides provided by websites like 911 Parrot Alert and others, posting on various lost and found facebook pages, nextdoor, craigslist, and so on. The most effective way of getting reports has been the physical signs we've posted around town.

Thank you for your help!

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome to the forums under most unfortunate circumstances. I'm glad you are able to track Minho's location over the ten-day period. He clearly has sound survival skills and remains fairly close to home.

Wishing you a swift reuniting with Minho, particularly before weather worsens. Seems you've spread the word, perhaps this thread may offer additional tips: http://www.parrotforums.com/lost-found/49129-bring-them-home-tips-locating-lost-bird.html

Thank you all for your encouraging words.

Yes, Minho appears to have already survived the winter storm and the other bad weather conditions we've had since the middle of October. We're hoping he continues to have a good spot to stay at night when it's cold and the weather is not cooperating.

If anyone has or can make a sound recording of a female red-bellied parrot squawking, let me know. We're playing these loudly in the hopes it will attract him. In the meantime, we're getting a sighting every week or so, searching the areas, setting up his cage as a trap in friends' back yards near the sightings and trying to figure out where he may be roosting.

Thank you for your help.

Here's a picture of him.

Gorgeous bird, his coloring stands out and should enable tracking. Hope you retrieve him soon!

I'm holding the two of you in my heart. Best of luck and comfort to both of you. You sound very brave in your posts, but I know you must be struggling. Hang in there.
