lovebird vomiting

Hi everyone,

I am a first time lovebird owner, and this is the first time I've seen my lovebird act in this way. While I have not seen actual vomit, I suspect it may be doing just that, or maybe choking? I know that many of you may say take it to a vet, but I want to know if this is really a case of emergency or is this normal isolated occurance that doesnt need panicking.

This morning I refilled his water and food, he was happily eating his food (the small millet seeds in the mix) when he started bobbing his head as if he was trying to get something out of his throat. Then he was shaking his head, where a bunch of seeds seem to be flying out of his mouth. His feathers got puffed up (it wasnt like that before) and he seemed tired after the episode and went to sleep on a perch.

Then I had to go to work so I couldnt observe further. hoping he is ok by the time i get back.

He is about 10 weeks old.

Let me know if anyone has had similar experiences and whether this is really an emergency.

thanks so much,

Sil

It's difficult to say over the internet what is or isn't an emergency. :( It's always better to err on the side of caution especially with a baby. Did you take him for a well bird check when you first got him?

I certainly hope he will be fine.

I havent taken him for a vet check, the shop I got him at was pretty reputable and did hand feeding themselves, had him for a month and didnt have any problems....

He was still chirping and climbing right up to when i was about to leave. then he went to sleep.

My lovebirds do all of those things, just not at the same time. They bob their heads a lot while tweeting, I've been told that is a sign of general happiness. Peri especially likes to shake his head side to side while he's singing, it is similar to the motion of a woman with long hair getting her bangs out of her eyes, lol.
And as for the food scattering, they do it with their beaks sometimes, but Honey will even SIT in the food dish and flap around to cause the seed/pellet mix to scatter all over the cage bottom.
My friend Becky says this is flock behavior; she's "found" food and she's spreading it around for the rest of her imaginary flock, so they can all eat off the ground and not bother her stash. :p Goofballs.

I hope your little guy is ok. A quick check up with an avian vet is probably a good idea if you have any doubts. I always say that peace of mind is priceless. :)
