Baby Lorikeet ~ Petrie
And 2 Lovebirds
Hi everyone! So, i bought a breeding pair of Lovebirds from a bird breeder about 3 years ago (they were babies when i got them). They live in a big cage/aviary that my Dad built when i was little, with built in boxes for them to have nests in. And since releasing my Lorikeet into the wild a couple of days ago, I really want another bird to raise and look after :p So i'm trying to breed my Lovebirds!
I take extra special care of them - give them new grass every morning, feed them a variety of different seeds, always keeping them clean, healthy & happy :)
At the moment, their nesting box is over flowing with grass and leaves. I'll post a pic later on. Its crazy
It's been about a week since i saw them mate, and usually when i go outside they are flying around and eating. But all morning, the female has been in her nesting box and the male has been sitting on the perch outside of it like he's guarding it. Does this mean that the female has laid an egg? I don't really want to open the box and check, because it might disturb them. And i read that the egg hatches about 20 or so days after it's been laid. SO, all i'm asking is if anyone has any tips on successfully breeding them, and if you think that an egg might of been laid already? Any tips on Lovebird breeding would help me out a lot! Thank you :D :rainbow1:

breeding lovebirds is great!!! its ok to open the box and check I do with all my breeding lovebirds everyday. the male usually will guard the box all day and mom will stay in it when she has eggs so she may have eggs since this is their first clutch keep close eye on the babies when they hatch to make sure the parents are caring for them properly! And be certain to be prepared for handfeeding its hard and scary at first many thing can go wrong with it. make sure your lovebirds have extra calcium while they are breeding they really need lots of calcium! and my eggs all hatch in 23-26 days. Good luck!!!

The door to the nesting box is at the back, its not on the top or the side :( So i'm scared that they have built their nest against the back wall, and when i open it i will destroy their nest or it will fall out! :(

oh right I get it can you shine a flashlight in the front opening?? You will want to keep an eye on the babies as they grown and socialize with them if you dont pull for handfeeding.

grab your camera, and take a picture of the inside of the nesting box.

I do that from time to time, it gives you a chance to sit and study the photo, rather than just taking a quick peek, often we miss things when we are feeling rushed due to the parents being upset.

sounds to me like they are nesting/laying eggs. she will lay every other day, and the first egg will hatch from 21-23 days usually, sometimes it can take a little longer.
don't worry, they know what they are doing :)

but you must check periodically to make sure things are going smoothly.
