I'm a first time lovebird (bird) owner. My dog plucked a bunch of feathers from the lovebird Mitsouko. the bird is right now under a light bulb and in shock. He has a super tiny whole and is not bleeding. What can I do??? The bird is falling asleep but then awakes.

what can i do?

if Mitsouko was attacked and there is any type of visible injury you need to get to an avian vet asap

seek an avian vet ASAP, often a bird will die from shock rather than the ailment itself.

good luck

Ok so we are here and they don't think he's in shock because he's alert and feisty. It didn't need oxygen. We are now waiting for the main vet to see him.

ok, good news. Mitsouko is now home and doing ok. The vet gave him some oxygen which he did well with. He's breathing well, he's still fiesty ( like he always is). They gave him antibiotic, anti inflammatory for his pain (since he's on one side of his body she feels it's because of pain), hydration shots for over night hydration. They cleaned up the area, no open wounds. He does have like dark purple dots but they think it's because of the plucking. Right now he's in his traveling cage which is small, compact with towels. He's warm and eating inside the small travel cage. They told me hydration and food is what will make him way better.

thank you for the help guys and well wishes! :orange:

Yikes how scary. Glad your baby is okay.

thank you so much! It has been an insane night. I was so nervous. This is the first bird I've ever had and i love it so much. He's only five months but he has my heart! I have a feeling all will be ok. Just in case, tomorrow I'm taking it to an aviary specialist. Today the emergency pet hospital saw him. They knew what they were talking about it seemed. At least someone say him that knew more than me lol.
thank you! :orange:

quick question... do the tail feathers grow back? also the feathers on his back? approximately how long? Does it mean that I have to keep him warmer all these months that it might take? thanks!

Both my birds are only 5 months too. I forget sometimes they are just babies, still learning, and settling in. I think the avian vet is a really good idea, especially if you have any doubts. Your a good mommy to your baby. Keep us posted. I hope it all works out for you.

As long as no open wounds, he'll be okay. I trust you've learned a lesson about dogs & birds together. Accidents happen. You & he were lucky this time. The feathers will grow back.

The feathers will grow back if they were just pulled, no worries!!! It's gonna take a little bit. Never really timed them but I don't it won't take too long. Just keep him warm for now and like they say, keep water and feed, he'll be better in no time! :)

I would keep him warm today, and see how he is. If he's good then you can stop.

he may tire more easily due to the stress, or he may be totally fine.

you did a great job, just remember most times cats & dogs don't mix with birds

Hello and thank you guys again for the well wishes. Mitsuko is acting like himself this morning. He ate, drank water. We are currently at the avian vet office. They are doing an x ray to rule out fractures and broken tail. He was limping this morning. The dr says I did excellent and probably saved his life by taking him last night to the emergency center.

Will keep you guys posted
