I came home with the most strikingly beautiful lovebird today.
I was fascinated with it's beauty.
I have no idea what sex it is, but I am guessing it is female by the way it perches.

I'm thinking it may be a hybrid, but again that is just a guess.
I'm going to name her Rainbow for now.

I have not altered her colour in any way, so as you can see in the photos how brilliant she is and the multitude of colours she has.WOW!!

Are you going to take this new addition to a vet for a checkup? If so have the liver function checked. On avian web they show a lovebird with red feathers that developed when fatty liver disease was present. It's disturbing similar to me, I really hope it is a mutation. Even very young birds can develop fatty liver, I know of galahs who developed it as young as two years old.

I got it from the 'stupid' pet store, where I got Puff, and the three sick canaries.

wow that is very interesting Ashley. I hope it's just the mutation, and not health issues, uggggg, just what I don't need.

As long as she behaviour is normal I'll keep her here under quarantine in my daughters room.

although, the bird in the picture does look ill, where mine looks ok, her poop is fine, bright, alert, flying around, chirping etc....
I'm wondering if it's a cross between a Lutino lovebird and a pied peach face

in the past 5 minutes I have researched this bird. there is a 50/50 chance I either have a red suffusion/pied lovebird, OR, it has a metabolic issue with kidney or liver.

I'm going to look into if they have other symptoms.....sniff sniff....

That's great to know there is a mutation like that :) I bet it is the mutation in such a young bird, but good idea like you said to watch for any other symptoms.

Rosie's liver test (it's called bile something) cost around $160, not to outrageous compared to some test. Also, if your grocery store sells dandelions greens, or you have some in your yard and no chemicals are used that will support liver function. Good thing to offer while observing your new buddy.

INCREDIBLE color. I sure hope it is mutation and not sickness! I never would have thought of that. I had a "stupid" pet store in my town growing up. There were several occasions when I went in for food or something and ended up pointing to a bird and saying "You put him in a box for me RIGHT NOW!" and hoping I had enough money on me to pay for him. Fortunately, I recieved news a couple of weeks ago that they are OUT OF BUSINESS!! Thanks to the new competition in town that has this weird idea that cages should be clean and pets should be handled and fed healthy food...

I give Dandelion 3x's per week, along with other leafy greens.

I can have her tested thru health gene for her mutation genetics, which I might do. it would solve any genetic issues that need to be answered.

well, Casey(DallyTsuka) has helped me out. She sent me pages of info. she has an excellent book on lovebirds.

the only way we will know for sure is to see my avian vet, which I may do in the new year. then I will get the answers, and hopefully they will be good.
