okay so watching Mango with his ball, and my husband and I noticed that he tries to climb on top of it and do the whole male thing with it... but then it doesnt work out because obviously its a BALL and rolls AWAY from him... so he proceeds to present himself like a female to it... you know, wings up and spread with tail up and body lowered? i've never heard of a MALE lovebird presenting himself like this. and it's not the first time. he's done it to MUNCH, his sister before (Munch is a whole nother story!).

Mango has been DNA'd. he is a male.

you can see the DNA certificates here for both my lovebirds

so my question is: How many other lovebird owners have witnessed this type of gender-swapping behaviour?

Yes my DNA sexed Sophie when she had a happy hut would hump it all the time. Till I removed it. She also does the whole wings out and butt up when she hears my boy budgie singing. She loves him. Lol. But they have never been near each other. Can't really trust her.

Also forgot to add. My male female budgies reverse roles too. When he is on top it works. Lol. But when my girl tries to mount him. Not so good. She is also a lot bigger than him.

lol so it seems that it is not too unusual! you know, ive asked before on other forums and no one ever had an answer for me, another reason to like this forum--folks are friendly and willing to answer and join in discussions here! :D

my female Munch likes to hump things as well, she's tried to mount Mango when he presented to her... which really baffled me.

we dont encourage these behaviours with both of them, but sometimes they dont behave when they are out of the cage together. hence all eggs she lays get boiled, just in case!
