my darling lovebird
Hey!!
So i just got a lovebird! Last time i got a lovie it turned out to be a budgie but this time its a actual peach faced lovebird:D its a girl, around 8 months old. I havent named her yet but ill tell you soon;) so im gonna need loads of advice from you all, like what lovies like eating , what kind of toys they like and stuff- just tell me everything i need to know:p
Im worried about some things though. I noticed a lot of tiny white mites crawling around her eyes. Is there anything i can do?
Shes been doing somersaults continously from morning, like CONTINUOUSLY, on every wied corner and perch she can find. Is that normal?
One more thing- she sleeps hanging from the bars with her beak hooked on. I think thats okay? And yeah, her droppings are somewhat watery. shes eating a lit but i havent noticed her drinking water yet.
Thanks for all the advice!!!! :D::D

Birdie, my Lutino lovebird.
Congratulations on your new lovebird. :)
Her beginning diet should depend on what she ate before. What did she eat at her last home? If possible, contact her former owners or wherever she was kept and find out.
Eventually, you'll want to move to a pellet--Roudybush, Harrison's, etc.--seed mix, and fresh food diet. Pellets shouldn't exceed more than 60% or so of the bird's diet. Fresh food can include a lot of different things like carrots, seedless apple, broccoli, bananas, strawberries, etc. If possible, get organic ones.
Lovebirds love chewing. Since yours is a girl, you'll have to try to limit this. Most birds like to chew on any- and everything, especially paper and cardboard (and valuable items, sigh). Your lovebird shouldn't do this because she's female, and letting her chew means you're allowing her to be "nesty" and hormonal. If you do want to let her do her natural chewing thing, try to make it something that she can't actually shred and make a nest with.
Lovebirds love bells. Try to get the open ones with really well-secured clappers, not the jingle-type bells.
They also like things they can bite (but not chew, necessarily) like wooden toys.

I don't know much about the mites and the somersaulting so hopefully, a more expert-like person will come soon. However, I can say that the sleeping with the beak on the bars is a little strange. It might be a little birdy quirk, but I'm not sure.
The watery droppings.. concern me a little. If she hasn't really been drinking water, they shouldn't be that watery. My bird will sometimes have runny droppings but only if it recently drank a lot of water.

*takes a deep breath* Okay. That was a lot. I hope I helped at least a little and that someone will come and help you with your other questions. Congratulations again. :D

Congrats on your new bird. My personal opinion would be take the bird back to pet store and have them pay for Vet checkup and any associated cost. I am no expert but mites does not sound good and should be addressed asap by vet and pet store should pay for it. Good luck!

That's such a cool name. :) Much cooler than "Birdie", I have to admit. Hehe.
