hi everyone, I wonder if I can get a bit of feedback on a lovie dilema.
I have 6 lovebirds. 4 peach face and 2 fischer. for the last 3 months they have been living in my outdoor avairy which is 6ft by 6ft with a roof half panneled at the back and at night I cover the sides. the weather is now getting cold at night so was thinking of bringing them back indoors at night and fly in the avairy outside during the day when the temps a bit warmer.

BUT.......... 2 pairs have laid eggs in the last 2 weeks while I was on holiday. they both have homemade nest boxes.

so my dilema is this..... should i bring them indoors at night (with their nest box n eggs) or leave them outside until babies are born. or will it be too cold for the babies?? last night it was 8 degrees. I live in france near paris. In the day its about 15 to 20.

the way I take my birds indoors from the outside avairy is I have a large cage on wheels that I put against the outdoor avairy. my birds go on a stick and I put them in the cage then wheel it into the house for the night. I could attatch the nest boxes to this cage so the babies travel with the parents ;). then during the day leave this cage against the outdoor avairy so the parents can go fly and return to the babies when they want.
OR should I leave them outside until babies are out of the nest box??
would love some feedback........

There might be a chance that they will abandon the eggs once you move the nest boxes. But no you should not keep them outside if it's getting down to 8 degrees! Even at 15 to 20 your asking for it. With the pairing situation you need to have the pairs separated in their own cage with their nest box, they do not tolerate of others in close proximity when on eggs. That's IF they would go back to their eggs after the move. You should keep them indoors until outside is much warmer then it is now. If you lose the eggs, so be it, you need to think about your existing birds instead!!!!

Welcome to the forums, maybe we can give you a bit of info or maybe someone with experience with your dilemma will pop-in here.....

With the birds that are on eggs, how good is your relationship with them and have they raised chicks with you before? Since you don't say that you handle them, rather have them stick trained, I might be inclined to leave them in the outdoor aviary.....lovebirds are not big fans of crowds, especially when on eggs/chicks.....

If you start moving them & their nest boxes, you get them upset, they might abandon the eggs.....there is a breeder in The Netherlands who routinely breaks ice from his birds water dishes and he raises perfectly healthy birds.....

If the eggs hatch and your temperatures stay reasonable for the next month and a half, you should be able to bring your increased flock indoors.....in really cold temps both parents should be in the nest boxes at night, if they don't and it gets below 0, you may have to figure out how to get the birds not sitting on eggs/chicks out of the aviary & into the indoor cage, then after moving them indoors, figure out how to do the same thing with the two pairs and their eggs/chicks.....given the normal attitudes of lovebirds, I think I would be afraid of keeping the two setting pairs and their eggs/chicks with the rest of your flock.....

Good luck.....

Sorry Mikey, didn't mean to step on your reply ! ! !

thanks for the replies. the two pairs are happy together no fighting as my cage is 2m x 2m and 2m high. the nest boxes are not near each other. on the bottom live 6 quail. my two young fischers come in at night. they keep themselves to themselves in the outdoor avairy. no fights. but too young to be thinking babies so dont have nest box.
I think I will keep the egg sitting pairs outside until the chicks hatch then move them indoors. also get some more cages lol. if its nice during the day they can go outside for some flight time. inside the cage with all the covers closed its actually warmer specially with the quail in there :) temp today is 22 degrees :). just cooler at night.
