Bites!

Usually I'm able to be okay with naughty little Cream's biting, since usually it seems to be provoked (regardless of whether or not I was aware of it at the time). For example, he might bite while he's sitting on the laptop while I have to type something, or when he's getting territorial around the fish tank (his favourite place). But I think he's getting a bit too aggressive.

This morning, he attacked my finger completely unprovoked (seemingly). I was using my mouse, about 1 ft away from my laptop, where he was sitting. He got up and bit me completely unexpectedly! I think he wanted to chew on the wire, but that's the only thing I can think of.

I usually let him do what he wants to do, under my supervision of course. I think he's a bit pampered. He gets at least 1 hour of out-of-cage time a day, usually around 2 hours though, because he's let out in the morning and when I get home from work. He also has a fairly large cage with toys that he does sometimes play with (although he much prefers the forager toys).

Information: He's a peach-faced and he's about 2 years old. I've had him since mid-June. He will step up onto my hand with the proper gestures, but that's as far training has gone with him. His cage I want to say is about 18-24 inches high, 18-24 inches wide (eye-ball estimate), and 30 inches long, and he is housed by himself. Every day when I leave I turn on the TV for him so he doesn't get bored. He's also extremely chirpy and active.

He's a bird with a lot of 'tude, and I like his 'tude, but I wish he was a little less bitey. I love him very much though. Is there any advice you can give?

Having experience with Lovebirds, breeding selling and training, the only thing i can think of is "Puberty" He's a boy right? and he's 2. that's usually when they start with the aggressiveness. My Nibblett did the same thing. Iit has lessened with time for me and my Lovebirds but their all different. It wont last long. And this is breeding season for lovebirds (Winter months) even though they breed all year round with a nest box typically.

That's just my opinion, im not around the bird to inspect him though ^^

Sorry Cream is being Nippy. Does he have plenty of chew toys to distract him, or is Cream a chewer?

Oh, he's a chewer alright. He loves to chew on paper and things. Like I said though, he never attacked unprovoked until this morning. Very very strange. Maybe he's just hormonal? lol. Timothy's explanation seems to be key here. Too bad this will get in the way of having him get more comfortable with me... the bird will land right on my head but no touching. That's okay. I still love his tude.

He does have toys to chew on (and I don't mind him chewing paper) and usually he's not too bad. But he is nippy when he comes near me.

One thing you can try is observe his behavior. Is he (forgive the crudeness) Masturbating on any of his toys or perches? (It will look like he is itching his butt ^^) Try removing these for now. You can also try rotating all of his toys out for new ones (This is a good idea for parrots regardless, new toys are stimulating, and giving the old ones a break and then reintroducing them keeps all your toys fresh and interesting for the birds enjoyment)

I think hormones is a good possibility, if that's the case his nippiness is only temporary. Chewing is a wonderful distraction. Extra sleep can be helpful too.

No worried Timothy, if that's the case then that would certainly be somewhat amusing. Perv bird lol!

Hmm... I haven't seen him do that Timothy (not sure though, I'm out of the house for work about 9 hours a day including drive time), but I do know that he absolutely ADORES sitting on top of the fish tank. On his favourite perch, he sometimes goes back and forth, although I'm not sure if it's close enough for that "effect" lol. He also rubs his beak back and forth on it sometimes like as if he has a scratch, although I don't think it's related. Maybe the fish tank IS the issue... I wonder if it vibrates and stimulates him that way? He also loves warm things, but I think that's pretty normal for birds in general.

Should I rotate the perches too?

On sleep, he usually goes to bed around 8 PM and wakes everyone up around 7:30. lol. But I wonder if he doesn't really "sleep" until a bit later? Maybe that's causing his hostility as well.

My Niblett usually "Does" it on the end of his green perch. Looks like he's dancing sort of, rubbing his bum on it. I Notice it a lot because my writing computer is right next to his cage - It's quite silent in there and he makes a ...for lack of a better word... squishing? sound. I don't know if it comes from his beak or his butt but it is quite distracting when one has a touch of writer's block! *Sigh* He has no couth

I do wish he would "do" Nelly, instead of his perch, because then the last 3 batches of eggs would have been fertile!

And i would have some Money!!

Yeah, I am convinced my bird is very hormonal. He gets very territorial of the frog aquarium, and gets angry if I go near it. Today, though, I'm pretty sure he was trying to regurgitate and flashing off his wings all "things are about to get funky" style.

I am laughing, my bird is going through his angsty teenage hormonal phase. But it's also annoying for the same reasons. Oh well, at least it's not anything I'm doing. He seems like a happy bird.

EDIT: Moved the fish and frogs. (S)he seems very confused right now, which frankly is somewhat funny (they watched me put it elsewhere while in the cage lol). Hopefully this helps resolve some issues.

you 100% sure he is a boy?

to me to this extent sounds more like you are coping with a nesty hen :/ i have both genders and the female is nasty aggressive when hormonal, and territorial about her cage in general.

any tail up and wing spread postures? just read above, sounds like the female uh.. presenting herself with flashing her wings... and sounds like you have a hen who sees the aquarium as a strange nest box. i'd move the aquarium out of her/his sight... before you deal with eggs, trust me. you dont want the complications of egg laying.

Maybe it is a girl... I'll move the fish and frogs just in case.

is this the "flashy wings" thing s/he does?

if so, plus the behaviour, im pretty sure cream is likely a girl.

I haven't seen them do that yet. Usually (s)he seems to stretch their wings upward, close to each other. I'd have to draw it to show what I mean, and I don't have my tablet yet... seems like a normal stretch though. The only time s(he) stretches out their wings is when they're just stretching one wing, not both, and it looks like a regular stretch. Earlier today though it looked like Cream was trying to regurgitate food. So I have no idea. I moved the fish tank just in case.

ahh okay :) sounds like stretching as well to me now that you explain it better.

so gender is up in the air, but does sound hormonal all the same. may be a good idea to remove the offending "nest" hopefully your aquatic fids understand :p

They seemed alright after the slight move. The bird is quite confused though lol.
