New owner! :D I bought three young (younger than a year) lovebirds six days ago :3 They are two females and one male, and decided to put the second female in a lone cage because I want to at least tame one and was told taming a pair will be hard.

And their homes:

The pair will be getting a larger cage with a nest box and the loner will move to the yellow cage and then I'll have an empty cage which I have no idea what I'll get for! Probably save it to keep a baby from the pair :) Of course I don't plan on breeding until I read enough and learn enough, and only once my mentor is available to help :) He breeds a lot of different birds.

They aren't tame at all, used to be terrified of someone just being in the same room as their cage, but since they are in the family room, my 5 year old watches TV here all the time and I'm on the PC here all the time, so they seemed to have calmed down a LOT. Now they just freak out if you get near their cage to change their food and such (luckily their food can be replaced from the outside, cuz if I even open the door to the cage they fly out and its very hard to catch them xD)

Congrats on your new flock Aushi.....you mention they are younger than a year...how much younger? You also mentioned you weren't going to do any breeding until you've read enough and your mentor is available.....

I think you're right to learn as much as you can about a bird specie before raising them, you may not really have a choice in the matter.....lovebirds are sexually mature at 9-12 months of age and a hen will normally lay eggs within a week of mating, so, now that you've caged them together, that's probably not going to be practicing you might catch them doing.....I know there is that old adage of practice makes perfect and they may well practice a first time or two, I think I might be inclined to do some fast reading, because if you see them practicing, my money would be on them trying for the real things showing up in about 5 days.....

Nice to have you in the forums, enjoy your stay.....good luck.....

Thank you! <3

Well I don't know their age :c Last owner told me "Well they HAVE to be younger than a year" but other than that I do not know. But they were caged together all three of them for a month and no eggs so I don't think they're trying, the seller told me that if there's no nest box, no trying? I've always owned same gendered pairs so I wouldn't know! Pleeease lemme know cuz I do have a third cage lol So I'll separate them and keep the cages together!

Just got my own pair a few weeks ago, no nestbox? No problem! They will still do their thang if the environment is right! Learning this first hand! LOL

Perhaps my pair aren't female and male? Or too young? I've only had them for a week but I haven't seen any "practice" lol And I'm with them 24/7 :c

A good tip given to me was to offer spray millet only by hand and speak softly to them. I was doing it outside the cage and poking it in as my hen is very aggressive and will bite badly. Was working for awhile til she went into a hormonal nesting rage!! LOL! Now I am waiting it out and dealing. Good tip? Wear an oven mitt if you have to stick ur hand in a biters cage! Hee-Hee!

Wing clipping is a testy topic (not unlike declawing ur cat!!) and should not be taken lightly if you are considering it. Many pros and cons and if done incorrectly you can mentally and physically harm your bird. A cut blood feather will kill.

I am by no means an expert, there are many many more people on here with more experience and hopefully they will also weigh in and help! This is just the small amount I have learned in my three weeks of birdie ownership! :)

Good Luck!
