New lovebird owner

Hi
Our family bought home a 14 week old Fishers lovebird (named Loki) 2 days ago. Its mainly my 14 year old sons bird. I have a few questions, some probably quite silly but I'm not going to learn if I don't ask.. It was bought as a handraised from a pet/produce place.
My son has been playing the blinking game with it and whistling when it squawks. We have been putting veg and fruig on our hands and holding it there for about 10 mins twice a day. Are we on the right track. Loki will initially climb around when we do that but then sits still.

Also Loki has these crazy noisy bursts where it squarks and sticks its beak on anything it can...is this normal.

thanks in advance.
Niksie

Re: New lovebird owner

Hey - I also am new lovie owner (got a monthish ago) and I am also learning. It can take awhile to gain their trust as it is my understanding that they have the intelligence of a two year old. They apparently can be quite affectionate, mine are wild and nesting so I have a very looong way to go! I know they should receive fruits and veggies every day and you can get great info on these forums, here's a great link about diet....

And also for sprouts....

sprouting questions

I have found lots of good advise thru this forum and by google. It was advised to me that I can try hand taming my birds by offering spray millet only by my hand, so they start to think that my hand is good. Since yours is supposedly already hand tame, maybe you can try this technique to get Loki to accept you? Just a thought, I hope others weigh in for you as well. Don't be discouraged and ask as many questions as you need to! I know I have....

Re: New lovebird owner

Is your bird clipped? It really helps in beginning when you need to tame it. My lovie is fully flighted now, but I had to clip her when I got her in May, also because I liked to take her outside. I got my lovie not tame and very shy (but extremely curious). So I just opened her cage door, sat on the floor with my computer some treats next to me, and let her explore. She would finally come out of her cage and explore the room, then come closer to me, check me out, find the treats and eat them. Very soon she became a good friend - crawled under my robe and would sit there.
There might be different views, but I prefer to have your bird out of cage as soon as possible, maybe after 4-5 days. Birds usually really love to spend time on the top of the cage as well - I always have feeders there.
