One Lovebird, one male named Stephan.

One Jenday Conure named Sakura.
So I had three lovebirds I had originally purchased together. Not hand fed nor hand raised, but definitely NOT aggressive... well, at least one of them. At first I researched how to get them used to us outside the cage and such and we did fine, but one day I had to open the cage to clean it and the birds got loose (they had their wings cut and all doors/windows were shut, so safe yay) but I noticed rather quickly that at least those two (I had a pair in one cage and one alone) wouldn't be socialized any time soon, and when they bit my daughter I decided risking it wasn't a good idea!

So I now only have one lovebird, but he is much more social than the other two were. He doesn't like you picking him up, but he'll tolerate your presence, like a king bothered by his peasants hahaha If you talk to him he'll chirp back at you and twist his head all curious like, my daughter loves watching him!

I'm sad that the pair wasn't able to be socialized as quickly as Stephan was (recently Stella.. but oopsie! lol) I understand it may take years, but with my daughter I just didn't want to risk her for my wanting to tame them :c

Either way! Bitter sweet, they are with an older couple that have a big aviary and they don't work or anything so they are nice and happy :3 And my Stephan is the king of the house who you do as he says! xD

Even though a bird is sold to you as hand fed/hand raised, different breeders consider hand feeding and hand raising as having different meanings.....

Some birds are not overly accepting of young children & may need to be socialized with children separately from adults.....usually because children have short attention spans & are off to new adventures on a whim.....also children may not give the bird a sense of stability and/or show a measure of fear/apprehension with the bird, its beak talons/nails.....

Like I said in the first post, these birds weren't hand raised, or hand fed. They were young birds bred with the intention of continue breeding. The idea of owning them was to leave them alone in a cage with food, water and a nest box and sell their young for profit. Never to be socialized. I never planned on having them be socialized enough to play with them or anything, just enough to the point where they would tolerate my presence, not even my child's, just mine. What alerted me was that they got free by mistake, my daughter was sitting down eating dinner, they landed on her and just started going for her ears (they landed on her shoulders) she wasn't even near their cage! The one who I house alone, he gets free cage time all the time, usually I let him out and ignore him completely since he doesn't want to have anything to do with us, and he never eeeever has tried anything like that :c

Now I have just the lone lovebird and a baby jenday conure :3 She's 5 weeks old, so definitely hand raising her.

Aushi - I feel your pain! When my female is getting free time any bare skin is fair game. When this nesting period is over (very soon!) I am going to do my best to hand tame them (bonded, male/female pair) My female also went for my young daughter and bit her pretty good on her hands before I got to them to get her away. Hopefully when her hormones settle some she will be a little more receptive to people.
