my darling lovebird
so ive had neon guava for almost an year now, and she's obsessed with mating with anything she can find- my hand, or someones hair or a toy or a rubber band and even my bro's crocs.
im assuming shes a she, because the pet shop guy says that.he had some theory about the beak or something, idk where he figured that out.
my parents say its not right to stop whats natural, and want to get her a pair.
my concerns are about the eggs- i dont think im ready for that responsibility right now... plus, my friends budgie laid eggs recently but the mom budgie died just a few days after the second egg hatched and i can see how hard that was on her. i cant take it if something like that happened..
another thing- i hear that lovies bond more strongly with another bird and wont pay attention to their humans again. well neon is so so bonded to us. she knows all my voice, she kinda figured out what her name is too. i call her from all around the house like every two minutes, and she always calls back... she'll kiss me all the time and preens my hair and stuff. so.. im being selfish but i really want her all for me..:eek:

any advice...?
sorry for that long post though :D:D hehe!

This behavior will pass in a few weeks. She is not deprived being an only bird. You are her bond! Enjoy your baby!

thank you :)
well i thought it pass over too, but really, she's been like this for almost 6-8 months.
in fact i remember that in the beggining, right when we got her, she used to sit on our head and make litle clicky noises, and bob her head. i realised later that she was trying to throw up food and mate.. eew :/
thats why im worried about her... she wont stop!!

There are a few things you can try if you haven't already. Remove tents, snuggle huts or anything that she may mistake for a nest. Give her more hours of uninterrupted sleep. Don't give her warm food. Limit handling to head and neck scratches for a while, and try interacting with her in other ways, clicker training for instance. Good luck with Guava! Let us know how she progresses.

BTW, I think you are very wise not to find a potential mate for Guava, I think that would only cause new problems for her.

Sorry I didn't see this post earlier, but...IMHO, don't worry about her mating behavior. It won't hurt anything, and it will pass. In my experience, unless she has another lovie available, she won't lay eggs. None of ours did until they had another one in the cage - then, the egg-laying started right up.
