Lovies and different breed companion ok?

Hi there!

So I am considering a companion for Jello. I DO NOT want a breeding pair, so I am probably going to have to DNA Jello to be 100% certain that he really is a HE; especially since the breeder thought I had a girl when he was very young and corrected that to a he recently. I have to say that Jello's behaviour SCREAMS male to me. No idea how to shred paper (confetti maker LOL), and he likes to "make love" to my pony tails all the time. Very persistent about it actually. I know whats to come when he starts his itchy, scritchy, chatter dance on my shoulder.

That brings me back to the companion bit. If I was to get Jello a male companion, (providing he is a HE), do you think he would be less persistent about mating with me? I have been busier lately as well and he's been cooped up alot poor guy.

Lastly, I was wondering if a parrotlet or similar sized bird (not a second lovie) would be good or bad?

What color were Jello's parents?

My male LB and male parrotlet truly hate each other. I have to keep them in completely different rooms so keep the noise level down from them trying to out-scream each other every day. They are both super bonded to me, so it's probably a jealousy issue, but something to consider.

My older LB (a 14-year-old female) once had a canary as a companion (not same cage, obviously) that she loved to watch and listen to. Ahh, the old peaceful days of bird keeping.

Not saying it won't work but in my case the Lovies I used to have doesn't get along with other species of birds other then their own but I've know people who kept them with parakeets and they get along great. Even with the lovie I have now doesn't get along with other species.

By the way, even if you have two females, they'll lay eggs regardless if there's a male around. If you have a female and with other specie of bird and they're getting along it doesn't mean she won't lay eggs. So it is best to find out what sex of lovie you have first before deciding what to get.

Jello's parents were both Lutino Peachfaced, so unfortunately for me I can't sex him that way. I will definitely be sexing him before doing this, but I am glad to hear about one members experience with a male lovie and male parrotlet. Jello is bonded strongly to me, so I don't want the risk of two boys screaming it out in my house. My three daughters are loud enough thankyouverymuch!!!

Yes, I think another male lovie would be your best bet. Btw! I love lutinos, your Jello is beautiful!

I would not recommend that you put your lovebied and a parrotlet together in the same cage as even though the lovebirds and the parrotlets are roughly the same size, generally lovebirds are aggressive to other birds. Another lovebird of the same sex should be fine. His mating/hormonal behavior even when you get a male will probably continue as while he will ave a friend he wont be mating with it. Anyway i hope you find a suitable friend for him, good luck.
