Lovebird Diet

I am adopting a lovebird that the owners do not have time for. I know the safe and unsafe foods and what she should be fed. But I would like to have one pelleted food and one seed mix as the base of her diet. What are good brands? What do your birds like? I avoid anything with artificial colors.

Not a lovebird, but the only pellets Zilla will kind of sort of maybe eat a little bit of is Goldenfeast Golden Obles. There is controversy over them because they have Agave Nectar in them, but I've tried them all it seems like and these are the only ones she even nibbles on.

Harrisons smallest size would be good. i use hagen tropican though. (pellet names)

I have been successful in converting all of my lovebirds(foster parents) to Zupreem natural pellets, even the babies! No not the best! But much better than the rotted seed from where I pulled them!

Thanks I will see what she is on and go from there. Sounds like she is on seeds so I am planning to switch her.

Would it be harmful to start switching her immediately?

My lovebirds adore Goldenfeast Petite Hookbill and Australian Blend. I feed that seed/nut/herb mix and Zupreem Fruit Blend pellets. I also feed them a sprout mix several times a week and whatever is in season produce wise at the store. They like almost everything. Congrats on your new Lovebird.

It sounds like zupreem may be the way to go to start her on a healthy pellet and I can just cut back the seed mix which is what she is use to

Should she be on small or medium? Because it looks like they also have an extra small and I know she isn't that small.

Believe it or not, mine eat the finch size. Mine seem to like it better than the "lovebird" size.

Which size is recommended though? They just say small medium etc. Not which birds they are for. At least in the site.

I mixed crushed pellets with wetted seeds for the first week. FYI, I still give seeds, but I sprout them first!

Sorry, direct answer! Since I sprout the seeds, yes, they are wet. Sprouting greatly increases the nutritional value of the seeds! And as I said, by mixing pellet dust into the mix, I slowly introduce new flavors!

I know most of the people here aren't fond of it, but I've used Kaytee Exact (original/natural) for the last 30 years as the main pellet for my birds and used to breed peach faced, fischer's and Madagascar lovebirds and they'd all eat it. Sprouted seeds (fresh) are the best, but other than that, seeds are pretty much seeds. You'd just have to read through the ingredients to see if the mix is what you want. If you want to test any seed mix... take a table spoon of the seeds and test-sprout them, if none of them sprout, they are basically dead and not worth anything nutritionally. Good luck.
