Hey Guys,
Just wondering, I have four lovebirds (Dilute Violet Pair & Mauve Slaty Pair) Does nest box arrangement affect the birds breeding? Can I put the nest box on the floor & be sure that the birds will do fine? They are both proven pairs & have laid for my friend (I have seen the eggs & chicks). Or can the nest boxes be aside each other? or below each other? Or facing each other? What would you say?
Thanks

Well, as a retired breeder, I will first ask, why do you want to breed? Do you have experience?
You have two pairs, are the housed together? This is not recommended. Lovebirds can become very territorial when breeding and will kill any birds that are a threat to their are.

See siggie :)
How long have you had the birds? Put the nest boxes on a shelf at about chest level so you can check them easily. The way you are breeding is called colony breeding. I strongly advise you not to. Instead, you could cabinet breed. This is much more efficient and safer, less chance of chicks dying, eggs being cracked, parents being attacked and even killed etc.

If you go ahead, place about 6 nest boxes at the same height, facing different angles, to reduce fights over the 'best' nest box. They will not nest on the ground, in the wild that would mean certain death. Make sure at least somebody is at home 24/7 to watch your birds. You need to be able to hear them from the house or something, that way you'll be able to listen for any fights.
