I apologize in advance for the long story

In short my vet told me bluey has dermatitus, i was given anti flammatory, antibiotics, antiseptic spray to dilute & painkillers to give for 10 days and contact vet on the 5th day incase he has not perked up or gotten better, sadly he hasnt so he has to go back to the vets :(

I have basically removed the bottom of the cage so the frame is on table stand put magazines and tissue so its softer for when he falls or wants to be on the floor, food and water on the floor and in his usual pots, put in a heat lamp (the ceramic infrared ones for reptiles) in one corner and left the other side for when he gets too hot, i put a tent in that side which he now sleeps on the outside while holding onto the cage with his beak & feet, i changed 2 of the perches to flat ones as he kept falling off the other ones, but now he isnt under the heat lamp as much as he use to be hes just between cage bars & tent practically hanging on by the edge of his beak, ignoring the flat perches (he kept siting on the round ones like a duck and falling off when he fell asleep so i thought it was better he have a flat one to lie down under the heat which he was doing practically all day untill i changed the perch, he only sat on it about 10mins if that) [emoji85]

I wanted to know if there is anything else i can do to make him feel more comfortable & ease the pain he is feeling.
If i should be leaving the heat lamp on 24/7 it does leave a red glow im not sure if it affects his sleeping iv read it does and it doesnt [emoji85] (i mean he was under it most of the time goes back and forth during the night but with new flat perch doesn't really go there anymore.

I can post any pictures if needed to help

Thanks for anyones help

I'm just a newbie, so I hope others chime in here, but I was looking at reptile lights and read that they can cause severe burns to birds. Please check that out, or ask the vet? I hope someone else can offer more suggestions. Take care. I hope he starts seeing improvement soon.

Yes my vet was the one who suggested the heat lamp & also read around it helped save a few peoples birds so im hoping it helps him, i put the lamp on a clamp above the cage so its not touching it but facing down at an angle, he goes and comes as he wants warmth with the other side free from the heat,

Thank you hes going back to the vets on Wednesday hoping he is getting better although to me he doenst look like it [emoji22]

I'm sorry to hear this, hope he gets through it.

Covering all but one side of the cage can help make them feel more secure. I did that with Cassie when she was dying a few years back.

I hope he will be ok.

Hes going back to the vets on Wednesday so im hoping he starts to feel a bit better with all the rest hes getting

Sorry to hear your Lovey is not well. Dermatitis is a skin condition is it not, not life threatening?

This can be caused by mites.

Are you seeing a Certified Avian Veterinarian, trained and experienced with Parrots and Exotics? That is some cocktail he is on.

Please would you tell some more ... when did it start, why etc, etc. Don't worry about length of text.

Hi

Yes in london there are only a few vets that actually deal with exotics and i got to one of them :)

I have read it could be from a few things but the vet didnt say what caused neither did i ask i just wanted to know what to give him to help him & make him more comfortable

I have read horror stories of birds dying from this so im just staying away from googling it so i don't have a heart attack

I don't exactly know when it happend only about 2 or 3 months ago i took both my lovies for a check up and the other vets told me they was both absolutely fine and in good health, it was about 2 weeks ago that i noticed he was a bit more quiet than usual (he isnt as loud as icey the female hes a bit more reserved ever since she nearly killed him a few years ago, but he still chirps plays occasionally and when let out flies straight out to be with icey and explore lol) (they live in seperate cages but next to eachother and only let out together when im there to supervise them)
when i first noticed him acting a bit different sometimes finding him at the bottom of the cage sleeping not really taking an interest in his toys that much or even shredding his paper or kitchen towel, wings were shivering aswell i honestly thought he was cold (yes im probally the worst mother ever how could i not realise he was ill [emoji24] [emoji24] ) i spoke to the vets and they didnt really think anything was wrong with him and put it down to deppression & just told me to open his cage and let him out alone incase icey was bullying him & to bring him in if i thought he was getting worse.

So last week monday i woke up to find he had blood on his feathers and on his beak i was mortified, i rang around everywhere to be seen but most places where closed from bank holiday, i finally got through to this vets and booked an appoinment explained everything and was reassured that as long as he was eating & drinking & the blood was not pouring out i didn't have to come in as an emergency but to keep an eye on him incase he got worse then to call back and come in.

The vets i am going to now i felt they was more helpfull and took more time to answer my questions and even show me how to administer the medicine properly & hold him without him tearing my finger off & seemed all round more caring.

Since that tuesday when he was seen by the vets, he is still drinking & eating properly, he was under the lamp alot sleeping there most of the day, ever since i have moved the tent back in he now sleeps by the tent holding onto the cage bars with his beak & feet leaning on the flat perch & the tent away from the lamp (other side) plus i put in a flat perch under the lamp to stop him from dropping off when he falls asleep, so I'm not sure if he doesnt need the warmth, or prefers the tent to lean on, or doesnt like the flat perch there but likes it on the other side leaning next to the tent he is not bathing at all so when i sprayed him with the antiseptic diluted per instructions it seemed like it made him worse, he was back at the bottom of the cage lying there in a panicked state and i felt awfull :(
He doesnt use his wings and mostly uses his feet and beak to get around the cage using them only if he looses his balance or is about to drop
Today he chirped abit which he hasnt done for a while & even stretched his wing abit

Iv added some pictures of him & how the cage is set up so far

Really sorry to see this little one in such as state. Disagree strongly with you re researching the diagnosed condition (do you know)? I have a 'too with a heart murmur and FLD and too right I want to know what is going on, how it occurred and more importantly what I can do to improve my boys life. AV's although marvellous in what they can do are a breed apart when it comes to communicating. I have given mine a hard time but you know what I have earned some respect. He no longer answers my questions to my husband, he speaks to me! This little bird is yours not the AV's - he gets loads through the door each day.

I know [emoji85] im just a wuss when reading horrifying stories about animals makes me feel a bit sick tbh.

When i bring him back to the vets il ask what could have caused it im not sure it could be mites as my other lovie icey is perfectly fine and before he got ill stole his cage i mean wouldn't it have passed onto her ?

Yes when i went to the vets i mainly focused on how i can make him feel better and more comfortable and what to do if he gets worse, at the time i didn't think to ask what caused it, i was still in shock how bad he got in such a short space of time [emoji24] [emoji24]

When i googled it i found horror stories but it was like googling a illness and your reading your dying in 2months but its something so minimal lol it felt like that tbh so i had to stop and just focused on how to make him more comfortable untill he gets better

Make a call tomorrow and ask some questions, say you were too shocked at the time but you do need to know what is what for this little ones sake. Ask to speak to a vet nurse.

Is this little one managing to take all his meds and is he Ok after? The 'why and what' are part of making them better as often we have to do some stuff to help eliminate what caused the problem in the first place. Your knowing could make all the difference to your little one. I have had to do a fair bit off my own bat that was not part of the AV's instructions, they only have so much time.

Come back and post what the vets say please? I am happy to hand hold tomorrow if you need that and we do not get anyone else come on with superior knowledge OK?

Yes he takes all his medication through syringe, he seems fine afterwards just annoyed he had to be held and fed yucky medicine lol goes to eat & drink has a little sit down then back to resting by his tent.

I remember when speaking to the vets she told me that he would keep pecking the area as its irritated and if we put anything on it he would keep pecking even more as he would feel "dirty" and try to get it off.
she spent alot of time explaining how to give the medications so i didnt feel as though i was rushed out like other places i have been to

Yes i will try to ring them tommorow if not then i will definitely ask the vets when i see her on wednesday

oh wow a Londoner! (small world) If you haven't been already try calling CJ Hall Vets in Sheen. From what I can tell they're one of the only parrot vets in London and definitely one of the top CAV's. I found so many exotic vets know less than nothing about birds/parrots and when they say exotic they mean anything that's not a cat or dog

Hi
Yea a very small world lol

I have been to cj halls before i just kinda felt rushed out the door and my money was wanted the nurses were nice

I went to barrier animal clinic i saw people with macaws & large cockatoos there and they said they always go there and found the vet who specilaises in parrots to be very helpfull :) , i personally found it to be more welcoming, all my questions were answered, the lady knew what she was doing explaining everything to me, how to do things make him more comfortable and i was told if i felt like i wouldn't be able to administer the medicine they would happily keep him and keep me updated everyday on his progress untill the treatment was over and can come back home, at the other place i didnt get that when my other lovie was scratched by my ninja cat :( or so much as questioning me wether they was on the right diet eating & drinking properly etc just small things that make me feel they care more about the animals welfare than getting the job done & getting paid & onto the next person. Maybe that was just my experience

It possibly could be worth getting a collar for your lovey? I suspect that he is picking at it and making things much worse. It will certainly make healing much harder.

https://www.birdsupplies.com/collections/bird-collars-for-self-mutilating-behavior
Lol they look like little tutu's

Im going to ask the vets if i should consider getting one from what i have seen so far of him and checking that area last night it seems to be looking a lil better, hes not touching that area as much as he use to but if i do see him doing that i stop him
Hes still eating and drinking like he normally would, hes just mostly sleeping in weird awkward positions no idea how he is comfortable lol
So im going to try and find a ceramic infrared heat bulb that doesnt emit any light as the red light is driving me crazy at night probally him too [emoji85]

ouch. Good to know that with CJ Hall. Was strange, I met some people from the practice at kingston in june and they seemed really good. I'll have to keep your vet in mind. There's also Kynoch vets but may be a bit far for you. They're down in wokingham in berkshire. So hard to find decent avian vets in the UK, none of them seem to want to tell people they're avian certified

Yea thats very far me they would rip open their boxes half way through that journey lol

I mean they are very competent at their job but i just didnt feel the friendly vibe & very caring nature towards animals as i did at barrier animal clinic,
i usually read google reviews & check that people with parrots have brought them in and how they found it, it helps decide.
I would rather go to a place that is very friendly very animal driven and happily pay for their services, i had worse problems like this even at "normal" vets with my cats leading to someone being fired as many other people complained about a few of the vets behavior & lack of caring nature towards the animals being seen, i mean i wouldn't continue seeing a doctor who i didnt feel was very caring so i wouldn't do it to my precious's, or maybe im just very fussy where i go lol

But its cheaper for me, cj halls is £60 for a check up not including any medicine and my last visits literally left me very broke lol
And this one is £32 for small birds and £50 for larger birds 2nd checkup is cheaper aswell... so that was a bonus for me & they was open on a bank holiday which saved me from a heart attack when bluey was really ill.

Nowhere close to me actually deals with birds at all, so reviews from people really help when choosing but then your personal experience may be different from mine

well it looks like you've potentially helped me out for the future. Barrier vets is only an extra 20 minutes drive for me so not bad really, especially for a twice a year check-up (unless something else happens)

If you haven't look at insurance with exotic direct. They're super good. My sister used them for her rabbit who had cyst issues and she sings their praises. Plus they're dirt cheap

Hey guys just a quick update

Took bluey to the vets today and she was happy with his progress although slow but still better than last time

He has to continue with his treatment for another 20days
With added vitamins & cleaning his wounds

We have to check back with the vets in a weeks time and if he shows no progress then he will have those precious tutu collars :) put on and have various tests done to make sure its nothing very serious

Will keep everyone updated

Thanks for all your support though this rough time [emoji173]
