Hi, I ordered a lovebird from a reliable breeder but once I received the bird his eyes were really swollen, actually protruding from head. Eyes looked like Marbles. I ordered 17 birds, all the other birds were in good health. The next day she was hunched over, barely perching and honestly not sure if it's eating. I have isolated her, she is breathing fast and her feathers look bad. They flew from Florida to Houston. She is currently in her own cage but her eyes still look swollen. Has anyone seen anything like this.

What does she have? What can I do besides just taking her to the vet?

I'll try to attach pictures. Please help. Thank you

poor thing looks miserable. I don't have anything to offer except prayers.
keep her warm.
keep an eye on her droppings. the more information you can give the vet the better.

if you have any pain meds for birds it might help. but give it sparingly. not being a vet you don't know how much to give.
it could help reduce the swelling in/with her eyes.

outside of taking her to a vet there's nothing that can be done

I would contact the breeder and let them know what's happened in regards to her so they can take necessary precautions, as good as breeders can be unforeseen things can happen and the move across the country could have brought out a previously unknown illness. Let them know what's been diagnosed

Why the reluctance to take an ill Parrot to an Avian Specialist?

You have an appointment scheduled for today, correct?

agreed with Sailboats. Is very worrying you're not already at the vets when you know they're ill.

Also just as a side-question, does that separate cage have food and water in it? And does it have more than the single perch? I would also check the other birds, they almost certainly have the same illness but aren't symptomatic yet

With 17 new birds, all of them should be going to the vet for a checkup to ensure health. The sick one will most likely die without medical attention from a professional. Please get all these birds to see a certified avian vet. If you are unwilling, then you shouldn't have bought these birds!!

Yes, 100%

Also, why 17 birds? For breeding or all to keep as pets?

If breeding you need to make sure there's a large sum of money aside just for them in case of vet bills etc. If for pets... You got your work cut out for you plus you need that sum of money aside

Thank you for the replies.
All others are separate as well. Quarantine from my other birds. She is the only one symptomatic. She has improved but her eyes are still swollen. She is flying around and much more active. I'm hoping she continues to improve.

There's an old saying that the doctors job is to amuse the patient while mother nature cures them. That's not as valid a saying anymore since we have new gadgets tests and etc. to actually fix things, doctors/vets can make a difference. If he's doing better good, but schedule a checkup anyways.

Again, no mention of taking her to a CAV or getting her any help. Do you really think she will just get better on her own? Not likely. Glad she is being quarantined but please get your bids to a vet! We are only concerned for your birds health. I know Florida has a vast amount of Avian Vets!

Don't think she's better

my conure was better one day then the next declined so fast I couln't get him to a vet in time

you may have to "suck it up" and pay for that vet trip. Welcome to owning pets, an expensive thankless job

I was asking for immediate help. Something I could do before taking her to the vet. Already have an appointment. She seems better so I hope she will get over this. Thanks for all the replies.

Good to hear! Could've done with that info! Just make sure she has plenty of food and water and is kept warm. All you can do really until getting to a vet

When is the vet appointment? I hope it is with a CAV...please let us know the outcome. I know if my eyes were swollen and I was feeling lethargic I'd already be at my doctor, and wouldn't let nature take its course and "hope" I feel better soon...but hey...that's just ME
